Okay, I'll start something new....

There's a new production of Jesus Christ Superstar out there (available only on DVD) that has started a resurgence in it's popularity. I've found selections from this great show noticably lacking for karaoke. I'm really only looking for a few tracks but would LOVE having the entire thing, perhaps on a 2 CDG set or something.

Tracks I'm looking for in particular:

Pilate's Dream
Trial Before Pilate
King Herod's Song
Could We Start Again Please (Duet)
Jesus Christ Superstar

Does anyone else favor this great musical? (And have you seen the new version? What do you think?)

Thanks,

Andrew

I love the music so much that I had the twin angels tattooed on my arm.
So far I have sung Herod's Song, Gethsemane, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Heaven on Their Minds for the karaoke public.

While I don't speak for Sound Choice, and admittedly they have surprised me in the past, for the most part they find Broadway as a niche market. I think the last disc they produced was "Hair" (which they nailed, as it's primarily a rock opera).
Since Pocket Songs has "beaten them to the punch" (so to speak) and released a version of JCS that used an actual orchestra, I doubt that SC will even consider it.

It's too bad. I have the Pocket Songs version and don't think very highly of it. I would love it if Sound Choice did one.

"Heaven On Their Minds" has always been my favorite, and no one has produced a version of "The Temple" yet, although that song isn't really set up for one person to sing.

If you're talking about the one with Glenn Carter, I would have to say I prefer the original better.

There are a lot of strong songs from that play/movie. I got a DVD of the original version but is there a re-worked version out that differs substantially from the one most people are familiar with?

Mark...

I certainly do respect the original film version of the JCS, but you have to admit, the new DVD production has got some really good things going for it.

Flame...

Yes, a new 'version' has been made of JCS. It's filmed like a 'theatre-in-the-round' type set up (sometimes looking straight down on the action and seeing things going on all around the main characters in the middle) and looks more like it has a post-apocolyptic twist on it. Unfortunately, I am only familier with the guy who plays King Herod (Rik Mayall - from 'The Young Ones', 'Bottom', and 'Drop Dead Fred') and plays him like he's a p***ed off lounge singer. The guy who plays JC (Glenn Carter) does a pretty good job, but I was more impressed with the actors that played Judas and Pilate. And Judas' backup singers for the title song are HOT! (lol)

To sum up - The original is great, but dated. The new version is hot, fast, and high-tech (more the way I like it).

(BTW, L'opera, I like the 'Angel' tattoo idea. That must look really neat!)

Andrew
