Any country band that has done a cover of a rock/pop song. I about lost it when I heard Brooks and Dung did "missing you".

Ace, I agree about that Brooks and Dunn version. Talk about bad. Although they definitely did My Maria justice. On the flip side, how about any of those pop groups that have redone country songs, such as All For One with I Swear or I Can Love You Like That.

actually, those 2 songs were a marketing tool and released at the same time, they didn't copy each other..they were both handed each song and were asked to do it their way.

How about that Aerosmith song from Armageddon? I think the country version sounds pretty good, actually.
Any "dance remix" of a slow song or love ballad sucks. I've heard them butcher "Total Eclipse Of The Heart," "What's Up," and even "My Heart Will Go On," complete with thumping bass and synthesizers.

"Hooked on a Feeling" ruined by Blue Swede. It makes a burka look like a nice cover.

I don't have too much complaints about cover songs, but remixes.....Ugh!!!!!!!!
Covers are homages or other way of presenting a story, giving full credit to the writer of the song.
Sampling or remixing is taking credit for another persons work. Worse case... M. Carey for Fantasy... She takes The Tom Tom Clubs Genius Of Love adds somes oohs and ahhs and says look at this song I Wrote.
As for Madonna's American Pie, I don't even think she knows what the song is about, she just probably wanted to wave the American flag and say look how patriotic I am, anyone see the video, you would think there would be a homage to Richie Valens and the others who died that day.
My latest pet peeve, is the Absolut Vodka ad with John & Yoko, I mean printing something like that so soon after George's death... #$#% @#($#*

I'm sure I've bitched about this one before, but why did they have to make "Amazed" and "I Hope You Dance" in both pop and country versions? Why can't Top 40 radio play the same version as the country stations?
Best,
Mark

The Aerosmith song from Armageddon was another one of those songs where someone wrote it and sold it to tow different people around the same time. As for All 4 One, I CAN"T STAND THEM!!!!
SHOOT THE BOY BANDS!!!!! and as far as re-mixes,,,,,,,,,,,,,YUCK!!!!

Mark, it wasn't enough that they did the pop re-mix of Amazed, but they went and did a second re-mix of it, for the slightly "less soft" than AC stations. I actually prefer this second re-mix, over the first one, and it's on karaoke on the Supercore label.

If memory serves, Will 2 Power also remade 10cc's "I'm Not In Love." Bleak, at best.
Some classics should definitely be left alone: (It's almost like the newer artists are saying, "Hey I can do that one better than you!")
"Emotions" by Destiny's Child...hell, Beyonce just flat out gives me a headache with this one...especially with her high note riffs towards the end.
On the other hand, there are some that deserved to be redone, for various reasons, that are quite entertaining (and may I add, complimentary to the original artist...especially when the original artist is included in the project):
"Hard To Say I'm Sorry" by Az Yet (featuring Peter Cetera).
"Sailing" by NSync (Christopher Cross performed with them at one awards show...was really great).
"Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm. (just hilarious)
The list is endless.
DavidE: agree with the Mariah/Tom Tom Club. That comment pretty much sums up Puff Daddy's entire career. Jamie Foxx did a comedy sketch about Puff Daddy and basically said the man can take any song, add a few "yeahs," "uh-huhs," "rights" and "uhs" and declare an original tune. That man can't be making any money since he's too busy forking out sampling and rights fees.

You know which song I don't like? That hip-hop remake of "Every Breath You Take." Even with Sting appearing in it for the awards show, it didn't sound very good.
DavidE: I haven't seen that Absolut Vodka ad. What's it all about?

I have to add "Killing Me Softly," as remade by the Fugees, to this list.

Although the lp (or CD - whatever you wanna call it is pretty damn good) I just can't listen to Tori Amos' cover of Happiness Is A Warm Gun, just too damn long and loopy. It's too bad because she does excellent versions of Heart Of Gold - rocking it up, and a very stripped down version of Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode. She usually is very true to the original and makes it interesting, but she lost me on Warm Gun.
