I have some discs I really would like to get rid of, but people keep requesting the songs on them. I would love it if SoundChoice could help remedy this.
How about,
Cat Stevens (this a biggy): Another Saturday Night Oh Very Young Father & Son
Roy Orbison: Blue Bayou {every one knows that one} Pretty Paper Blue Angel (Sweet)Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream) Candy Man
Foreigner: Head Games Dirty White Boy Jukebox Hero
Steve Miller: Space Cowboy Serenade Wild Mountain Honey
The Doors: Alabama Song (Next Whiskey Bar) Roadhouse Blues 20th Century Fox The End L. A. Woman Riders On The Storm
Jimi Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower Foxy Lady Angel
Matt Monro: Born Free Softly As I Leave You Walk Away Portrait Of My Love Alfie
There are enough song by all these artist to each have their own Star Series if not Spotlight.

Look BC, another vote for Cat Stevens! What I really want is "Father & Son."

And, Rebecca, you shall have it by early July (I think).
I'm trying to get together a Cat Star or a 3 Of A Kind with Cat and a couple other singer/songwriters from that era. I know there are some publishing issues with him; Yusuf Islam may be one of those artists who won't let us compile his songs onto a disc, I can't remember.
Larri, let me see if I can shed some light on your "junk" pile. I don't think you'll be seeing a Spotlight on any of these artists, but you will probably see Star discs or a 3 Of a Kind with some of them. Some of these songs have already been recorded (or are in the pipeline) and will be released this year. "All Along the Watchtower", "Father & Son", and "Blue Bayou" for instance. In fact, all three of the Hendrix songs will be recorded before the end of the year, but I can't tell you when they'll be out.
The Doors are a publishing no, so those songs won't happen. The same for the Sam Cooke song "Another Saturday Night". We've done versions by Sam Cooke and Jimmy Buffett and can't release them on CDG, so that's a waste of cash dollars for me to record yet another version that can only be released on cassette.
Steve Miller and Foreigner both have discs coming out. But the Steve Miller Star is filled with his bigger Hit songs, so there isn't room for the lesser hits or less well known songs (the musical quality is not the issue). When we sat down to discuss his disc, I was kind of surprised that we had to eliminate some pretty good tunes. Yes, I could spend thousands of dollars to record songs that are favorites of the die-hard contingent for any artist, but the die-hards won't justify the cost without help from a larger customer base.
Some of those Orbison tunes were on the NSC99 package, so I'll see what I can do about getting them onto general release discs. Although Roy deserves a Star of his own, I'm kind of surprised that his songs generate lots of requests. There aren't too many professional singers who take on his material because of the challenging vocal range and melodies. More power to those with adventurous spirits.
Thanks for the info. Later.
PS - Matt Monro? Lots of requests?? Really??? Boy, I learn something every day.

BC, does this mean that 8147 is off the market because it has Another Saturday Night on it? Or is that song on that disc by mistake, since that track is labelled as "The Weather Is Here, Wish You Wre Beautiful". If you are able to lisence a song, is there a time limit on how long you can use it?

Maybe this board needs a search engine so I can type in "BC" and "Sleeping dogs" so I know what you mean. Sorry, don't have that post handy. Was the sleeping dog the guy that types out the list for that disc? Or maybe it was just a deception to fool the anal publishers that only read what's on a disc, and not listen to it to see if the reproduction was actually worthy.

No, Dan, 8147 is not off the market. It is available here if you can't get it through your dealer.
8147 was one of those discs that was released, then recalled because of a publishing issue. ABKCO screamed bloody murder, so we pulled "Another Saturday Night", then re-released it with the replacement song. I'm not aware of any issue with the incorrect song title (but that was before my time).
On other discs, there is no point replacing songs, so we just let them slide into the discontinued abyss.

Yeah, 8147 and the re-release 8147-R is a MAJOR mess up from the standpoint of having multiple systems/lots of books. Nothing I hate more than having to buy several of the same discs AGAIN, because 1 disc was destroyed and we couldn't replace 8147 we had to change to 8147-R. That cost us at least 8 times what it should have.
My question to SC is: If you had the correct license from the publisher (ABKCO) in the first place, then they wouldn't be screaming bloody murder. However since ABKCO did scream bloody murder, forcing you to pull the disc, it indicates that perhaps not all was on the up-and-up at SC.
C'mon BC, you guys know that licensing from ABKCO is just as much fun as licensing from Disney, they just don't do it.

I never knew there were 2 versions of 8147. I guess I have an 'error' disc. Wonder how much I could get for it on ebay. Yeah, right. LOL. I'd rather have Another Saturday Night, then The Weather Is Here. When was this recall, because my dealer had this disc sent up from Prosing in March 99. I wonder how many misprinted discs are out there.
I will look forward to those releases. You have no idea how much in demand Father & Son is - it will be so nice to have a worthwhile rendition.
No room for the Steve Miller songs? Does seem like a case for having made a Spotlight.
I don't think lots of karaoke singers realize how hard it is to sing some songs. Many think of Roy Orbison as easy. I hope you can get us some of those "package" songs.
Maybe the Matt Monro songs are just particular to my shows. I have lots of old songs sung. It might have something to do with singing a lot of torch songs - or just the fact that I tend to have an older group of singers. I also have a junk Lettermen disc but no-one sings from that - I got it for myself anyway.
P.S. Don't take away my 8147
P.P.S. I don't have many requests for 8147, Jimmy Buffet just does not go over well, Except Margaritaville.

Larri, I have been trying, off and on, for over a year to learn Roy's "Only the Lonely" and "Oh, Pretty Woman" so I know full well how difficult they are. I have only heard "Oh, Pretty Woman" performed once and it was truly awful.
I love to sing "He Went to Paris" off the 8147 but most people don't much like it. It seems a bit of a downer, or so I have been told. "A Pirate Looks at Forty" is a good song, but not easy to learn. "Come Monday" is my favorite. I can do that one pretty well.

Dan, there aren't any "error" discs. There are 2 versions of 8147; one with "Another Saturday Night", and one without. If you have the 'original' disc with that song, it is certainly worth "more" (of something to someone) in the sense that it is no longer available.
Chip, if you know something, feel free to share with the rest of us. Otherwise, your remark "...indicates that perhaps everything was not on the up and up at SC" is unfounded and irresponsible. I could even get all bent out of shape.
8147 came out in February of 1995. Although that is way before my time and I don't have first-hand knowledge, perhaps ABKCO hadn't made its' policy know to SC, and it was released unknowingly. Or maybe SC decided to take a chance in order to bring the best possible product to the market.
Either way, it "indicates" nothing similar to the implications in your remark. We're always willing to pay any licensing fees. It's only a question of will we be granted or denied the licenses. It has never been an issue of "you haven't paid"; it's always the issue of we won't allow you to print/display the lyrics for karaoke. They don't negotiate for more money; they just say no.
That particular time it blew up in our faces. Painful experience has taught us not to bother with ABKCO anymore, same with Disney, Pearl Jam, Henley and others.

Oh, Pretty Women used to be one of the songs I used to sing - I got to have the right crowd though. Crying is a blast - blast the speakers too. I hope I can do better at Roy's version of Blue Bayou than I can at Linda's .
Now if I can only get someone to do 8147 Another Saturday Night, but It's not the one they want. Pencil Thin Moustache is sung a lot by one guy and no-one likes it. He sang Fins last week and it went over much better.

BC, we had one of those Buffett discs that listed "Weather is here, Wish you were beautiful" on the case and actually had "Another Saturday Night" on the disc. Somebody stole that disc and I finally got around to replacing it. This time the disc actually has "Weather is here, Wish you were beautiful" on it. By the way, "He Went To Paris" is awesome. That song is why I bought the disc. My husband loves to sing it(and I love to hear it). I'd love to see "Love In The Library" come out. We're going to the Jimmy Buffett concert here in Dallas tonight

BC, if there are 2 8147s, then mine MUST be an error disc, since as Alayne says, both the disc AND the jewel case label say The Weather Is Here.. but track 7 is Another Saturday Night. I'm not gonna send it to prove it to you, unless you'd like me to burn you a copy. LOL
