Talk to your freind. If you take the job, you'll be stabbing him in the back..plus probably losing a freind and mentor. Tell him what is people are complaining about and offer advise on how to correct it. It's the decent thing to do

Max has given you some great advice. Don't step on others to get where you want to go. Integrity, honesty, and goodwill will get you there (often quicker than you expect). Good turns beget good turns. Don't lose a friend, self respect, professional respect and karma points because the grass is greener at the Red Kitten. Do the right thing.

AMEN to that! Gem, you appear to be making it more complicated, and thus harder on yourself than may be necessary. The answer seems quite simple and "right-up-your-alley"....DO THE CHRISTIAN THING! What would Jesus do? Perhaps you may choose to approach the situation in a Christian manner - maybe even pray about it beforehand - and then follow what God instills in your heart!
Compassion, decency, honesty, and exhibition of overall humanitarianism generally works wonders with regard to the type of delicate, "sticky" situation and attendant dilemma which you have presented herein.
My final piece of advice to you:
Go with your heart, and not with your ambition on this one! Both you and your friend can emerge from this unscathed, while still remaining friends, if you think this thing through and play your cards right!
P.S. If there is any way that another KJ - with whom you may be acquainted - can be persuaded to assume your friend's gig, in order to save you from having to become involved in an unsavory and precarious matter, then you may consider persuing that option, if possible. Just food for thought!

Last night once again the bar owner came up to me and asked me if I was interested in taking it over..he said he had had it with john show up at 9:30 pm to set up when the show was to suppose to start at 9:30 then John had lost a cord he needed to hooked his stuff up with so he went over to Kmart to get it...by the time we had started it was 10:15....I told him I would be happy to take it over in June...hopefully this will give John & Mark enough time to talk about it but if not I will be taking it over...Like mark said the problem is between him & John and as far as me taking it over serveral people had made comments to Mark about how my music was up todate and thats what he wanted. You know if I wouldnt take it over someone else would be making the money.

I'd recommend you inform John immediately... mention it's nothing personal, but the man is losing his job.
And if he EVER steps foot in there, or finds out you're doing it, you're going to lose a friend. Now you can mention it's nothing personal and it'll be believed. It'll be much harder to tell John later when he comes up with the ol' "you stabbed me in the back" routine! It will SEEM like that if you don't tell him.

Knightshow but also that is between him and Mark the bar owner> If I dont take it over someone else will so it might as well be me....Mark said he would deal with John...the only thing this has done has thrown me into order a mega amount of Karaoke CDG's including the Mortor...In a way I do feel bad but if John is not cutting it and many patons of the bars asked if I could do it then it must be written in the cards...My main goal is to keep up the best selection in the area as well as bring back people who have left the Red Kitten due to Johns boring selection.....

But you originally stated that he is your friend. If he truly is, I would talk to him as well. You are correct, if you don't take the show, someone else will......is your friendship strong enough to take that kind of hit - especially if you don't talk with him. You need to know what the bar owner is saying to him as well. He could say, yeah well he offered me a better show....blah blah....etc. & leave out the fact that you weren't the one to come in, that he came to you. For me, I don't ever go into a bar that currently has karaoke, but if they call me, I will talk with the present host to let them know what's going on - even if I don't know them & ESPECIALLY if I do. I was in a similar situation years ago & thought the same thing, so I took the gig. Lost one of my best friends as well.

He's your 'friend' and a kj. It would be nice to have a 'friend' cover for you should you be sick or want to go on vacation. Even if the owner is going to talk to him, I would still call him. He may be glad that atleast its you(his friend), than somebody else 'taking the money'. Just my thoughts... Chuck

Believe me Gem, you don't want a reputation as a cutthroat... and from John's perspective, it will SEEM like that.
If you talk to him now, he'll see you had NOTHING to do with it, except being better at the job.
If anything, your friend just needs a well-placed kick in the pants to help straighten himself out! If you get comfortable, you CAN get lazy at the job... happens to all kinds of people. then along comes the new kid...
stereotypical, but it does apply!
