For some reason, I find very difficult to read messages off the JOLT forum at Karaoke.com.
I can't easily find topics, scan new posts, etc. The whole forum seems complicated to me (or not very user-friendly). Thus, I rarely go there. But, I'm afraid I'm missing out on Karaoke conversations .
Is it my imagination, or am I doing something wrong? Anyone have any insights, navigation tips, etc.?
Thanks

You are all not alone on this one. I rarely bother to go in there for the same reasons.

Tip: choose a log-in name and password (rather than just cruising as a "guest") and you'll have a much easier time.
JOLT also gives you the option of looking at the most recent postings (click "Recent") within any given topic, or starting from the beginning (click "To Top"). You can also "subscribe" ONLY to specific topics that interest you. One advantage that JOLT has over the SC forum is that you don't have to scroll through every single page to get to the new postings. Once you've set up your subscriptions, the "Check Subscriptions" feature takes you right to whatever posts have been added since your last visit. Plus you can subscribe or unsubscribe to any topic any time you want to.
If you have other specific questions, I'd be happy to help answer them, and I know there are other JOLT members that post here who would probably be happy to answer your questions, as well...JOLT is too great a source of information and entertainment for you guys to be missing out!

Personally, I don't find Jolt hard to navigate. However, there are such a volume and variety of topics amongst the many forums, that it can be a daunting task to get started.
My suggestion is that you take it a little bit at a time, until you feel more comfortable. For myself, I always check the Manufacturers Forum (for obvious reasons). Also, of great value to me are the KJ 2000, Singer 2000, and Software Talk forums. Every topic isn't going to relate to every individual, but there is a wealth of information (and some funny discussions, too).
You really need to take your time. Just like on Soundboard, there is a group of usual suspects, or cast of characters. There is less hesitation, though, about ripping on any topic or person, naming names and taking no prisoners. Be aware that with that freedom, there can be less civility or sense of manners on Jolt than there is here, so be prepared to leave your thin skin at home. Jolt is freewheeling in every sense of the word.
Check it out. Have fun.

In my experience, ANY forum gets a bit "cliquey" once a few people start reading/posting on it regularly...even this one! Believe me, it doesn't take long to become part of the JOLT family, if you want to participate...
I'll admit, JOLT regs do sometimes tend to stray from the topics at hand, and there is a bit of idiocy here and there...however, there are also a lot of intelligent people there with interesting and informative things to say.
As I said earlier, you can pick & choose which strings interest you by subscribing to them, and ignore the rest of them. Sure, it's a free-for-all sometimes, but it can be fun...
I generally keep my posts here geared more directly to SC products and issues, whereas I read JOLT for more generalized karaoke topics, as well as more open discussions about manufacturers other than SC. I realize JOLT may not be for everybody, but I recommend giving it a chance...

A good place to start if you're new to JOLT is the "Name That Tune" game we have going there (a more advanced version of what Jac is doing in another forum here). Here, the atmosphere is very loose, even looser than in the other areas of JOLT--I'm willing to bet that within a week of playing you'll feel that you've known these people for years!
Best,
Mark

Madgrrl: And WE don't stray off-topic on this forum? No, you're right. I've been posting on Jolt for a little over a year -- and it is also a good forum for discussions. 'Matter of fact, a KJ told me about this forum after she saw a couple of my posts on Jolt.

LOL, I have to laugh first because I'm such JOLT junkie. However, I'm have problems checking subscriptions and logging in. I have to check down the list for new messages. It's been like this for about two months and I've e-mailed them about it a couple of times. It may be my computer, probably is because it's been a pain lately. I still can post messages, it's just a little more trouble.
Having posted on Jolt since early 1997, I've met a lot of friends there. People tend to come and go and then there are a few like me who have been on forever. I was lucky enough to get together with several Jolters at a karaoke reunion in Baltimore s few weeks ago. It was incredible. Just like meeting your penpal for the first time.

Me too, I lately found JOLT was down for whatever reason. In fact, it was down just one and a half hours ago when I wanted to get on it, so I got here first. This site seems to be more reliable, though it's slower sometimes.

I've had trouble with access/logging on to Jolt many days in the past couple months.
I assumed it was my computer, or due to the new graphical look. I'm kind of relieved (not the best choice of words) to hear of others sharing the same problem. Maybe they can fix it.

I'm having problems trying to login to Jolt or into karaoke.com. It keeps asking me to login when I've already have. I even tried pasting my username/password up into the URL.
I'd post this on their site, but I don't like how the threads work, and actually I don't even think I can post since I'm not logged in in the first place! Argh argh!
I keep losing my cookie, my "certificate" expired, or some ridiculous nonsense like that. I remember before when I had this problem I just used Netscape to get around it, but now Netscape keeps crashing on me.
Any clues?

Sorry you're having difficulties with JOLT. It works fine, for the most part. Perhaps you might just want to invent a new username/PW to continue your access? I don't know.
Mark:
I know this response is very late to your NTT invitation, but I think it's neat that you invited people to start there. Back in the day, I started a new topic of NTT in the Singers Forum completely unaware of the chance that it would take on a life (and a section) of it's own. While I don't participate as much as others, I'm impressed and honored that you and others carry on your incredible lyrical knowledge/genius there!

Grateful, You're not the only one who has problems signing on Jolt, I even e-mailed them about not being able to sign on. No solution yet.

At this moment I can't get on JOLT at all. I thought it was my server, but I'm not so sure now. I have to go to a discussion first and then log in, press back browser twice and look for new messages individually. Seem to have trouble with the subscriptions. My new ones don't show automatically. I must subscribe to them individually. It's been like this for months. I'm still able to get on, but the the usual way. I've e-mailed them about it a long time ago.

I started logging on to Jolt about 2 months ago, and I found the only way I could make sure I was seeing all the new messages was to go through any thread I was interested in and click on "all messages." That way only the new messages are delineated when I check again. The problem with that is any replies to other postings are still not displayed when you click on all...so you have to go back and forth a bit. Luckily I'm on a T1 line at work.
There does seem to be a problem with the Jolt server, or maybe it's a software problem. I notice that when you try to post a reply (or maybe do anything that the server can't handle at the moment), it returns you to the login page. When this happens I just use the back button and try again (and sometimes again, and again...).
The Jolt software has some nice features, but I do prefer the software here at the Soundboard (which is the same software used at another hangout of mine, antique radios).
At least the Jolt software doesn't tell everyone when I correct a typo! Like this (read below):

But aren't you locked out from editing your message after 30 minutes?
Anyway, I was able to login to karaoke.com from work (I'm just trying to post product reviews... not go into Jolt forum). I still think it's some internet/security configuration on my home PC.
Oh, and I found some ways to manipulate the "edited on" message. Now, if I can only figure out how to make it white or grey, I'd could make it disappear . Soon... Soon...
Ahh... success!

Extremely helpful hints for navigating the JOLT forum:
Log In with a unique user name and password. JOLT is much easier to navigate if you create a user account (rather than just being a guest), even if you never intend to post anything.
Subscribe to the topics that interest you (when you're in the thread, click on the button at the bottom that says "Subscribe"). Then, the next time you visit JOLT, all you have to do is log in, then click the "Check Subscriptions" button and you'll go directly to all the newest postings in the topics you've subscribed to. Keep clicking "Check Subscriptions" and you can continue to navigate swiftly through only the new messages.
If you are a total forum junkie (like me!), you may want to subscribe to everything at first, then, as topics come up that don't interest you, click on "Cancel Subscripts" and that particular thread will be dropped from your list of subscriptions (and therefore will no longer appear when you check your subscriptions in the future).
I visit many different forums on the web, and I really find JOLT's system by far the easiest (and most enjoyable) to navigate. I know I've said all this before, but I really want to emphasize how user-friendly it really is, once you know how to use it.

Do the threads act like a web? Meaning, it seems the messages don't always go in order. Or, you can get to the same messages on cross-topics or something? Maybe I'm missing something or not doing it right. I'll try it Madgirl's way and see if it helps.

What a mess! I can't get on JOLT at all. I even tried coming in as a new person. It worked for a little while this morning, but not any longer. I just keep getting "page cannot be found".
