I am starting a new thread so I won't pollute BC's topic and give him further reason to berate me.

But, good grief! Go back and read your post.
How many times do you have two people consecutively select songs off the same disk?
Not very often, huh? Then what possible difference could it make if the songs people want are on different disks? You got to reach over and put them in, right? What difference does it make?

The thread was directed to folks buying for their own use. It is pretty much agreed that KJs who are buying for a wide variety of folks have no problem with Spotlights. It is folks like me and some others who don't want to pay thirty freakin' bucks for one song we want.

Maybe BC is trying to listen for a change. Don't distract him.

Thanks.

Dante

Instead of paying "Thirty Bucks" or whatever you pay for a Spotlight to buy one song - simply send me £15 and I know a bloke who will compile you any 15 songs off any Sound Choice discs and put them on a single CD+G.
He'll even print you a nice colour label that looks just like a Sound Choice disc.
Now that's what I call value. Obviously you need to sort of the cost of postage and delivery.

How about cutting out the middleman and simply referring us to this pirate? I would be proud to be the first to blow the whistle on him....I could use the thousand bucks!!
Bose, you're fairly new to the Board, but this is a DANGEROUS subject to be discussing. Just set your computer to read all posts in the last year or so....

Sorry I upset people. I think that themed disks are the way to go for the consumer purchasing for their own use . I was only pointing out that as a kj a disk with various styles and genres of music has a better bang for the buck for me because this one disk may please more people in my audience by giving a number of them something new to sing. I currently add 5 to 15 disks per month to our selection and I have 2 venues that I have done twice a week for over 5 years and I have a strong core of regulars. All I was pointing out was when a new sound choice comes out I think oh great "_____"(fill in name here) will love this . When pioneer was making disks and a new one came out I thought oh great "____" and "_____" and etc. will love this. Now would they be interested in buying that pioneer for themselves at home ? Probably not. They would probably wait for Sound Choice or pocket songs to release the song with other similar songs that they like. (More bang for their buck) . My goal is to add new song titles to my books that will please a varied crowd not just one person which is why I pointed this out. I think sound choice has done a good job on the star and spotlight series . The star series is geared more for the home user with vocals and more artist compilations. However, even though I may personally like an artist compilation on the spotlight disks I know that these disks appeal to a smaller number of my patrons when they come out than do random groupings. I will give you one hypothetical example. Lets say S.C. releases five new disks on spotlight and they are all artist disks Boyz to Men , Elton John, Billy Joel, Metallica, Frank Sinatra. Now when I spend my 150.00 bucks and add them to the books how many of the female members of my audience have I pleased?? This example is a stretch beacause S.C. would not release disks in this order but I hope you can at least see my side of it from the other side of the decks

We've never even heard of SPIN over here. I reckon they just added the 'I' to make it into a word. Let's face it, having 'Internationally' in your company name sounds much more impressive.
However, I shall be getting in contact with them to see how I can claim $1000 by turning into a piece of low-life scum.

(Don't take my posts seriously. I'm giving you all things to chat about so I can reach the big 50 and become a proper member).

Bose, I think you only need 20 posts to become a member. As for the guy that makes the discs, I remember coming across a website, which I've sinced forgetten, that offered this "service". He was from England. He wouldn't make compilations, only straight copies. The disclaimer on the front page, that read like a legal brief or something, said that by buying from him, you "certified" that you owned the original discs, and this guy was only making you a copy of a disc that you already own, which is legal in most countries. The disclaimer might as well have said "Nudge nudge wink wink" too. I emailed him to find out how much he charges and was told to send him 15 pounds (sorry, don't have that fancy L pound thing) after he sends me my disc. Awfully trusting. Anyway, I never took him up on it since, after currency exchange, customs fees, and service fees to send him a money order, I might as well buy the disc off the rack here.

As for SPIN, I agree that they are doing a good thing, although I think the reputation far exceeds actuality. People on here think they will lose their house to SPIN by playing a burnt disc. Seems that they are going after the pirates, not the pirate's customers. I haven't seen anything on their website yet that says they have seized KJ gear from someone playing copied discs. The laws he quoted said it's illegal to copy, not to posses copies.

That's a fine distinction, Dan- you are right about that...and I suppose I have a "mixed moral" about piracy:
If I make a "mix tape" on my CD burner to make a collection of songs to cruise in my car to, then I feel justified as long as I have the originals...HOWEVER, if I decide that carrying around 3,000 CDs to DJ a wedding is excessive, and burn only the best 1500 songs or so and make a personal gain by using these discs, then that falls into the realm of true piracy.
People- to copy karaoke CD+Gs will only serve to raise their high prices in the future...the music industry is on a precarious edge as it is with the advent of MP3s without people muddying the waters by going around making "convenient travel copies" of your favorite songs to sing in clubs that don't have what you want. If this keeps up, then the industry of music will be going the way of telephone service- it will be devalued and only the big ticket performers will truly thrive through live performances which are getting jacked up with higher and higher ticket prices to support more lawyers than artists...

-Oh! Sorry, lost myself in there!
*steps down off of the soapbox*

RC, I have to disagree, repectfully, that it would be wrong to make copies of those 1500 songs (that you actually paid for) to take to a wedding. Where the wrong comes in, is if you take those 1500 songs to one wedding, and your business partner takes the 3000 original CD's off to another wedding. I think that's one of the big issues SPIN was dealing with was KJ's who burnt discs and ran mulitple rigs with them.

As for me, or anyone, making travel copies of our CDGs, that's not an argument I need to get into. The law in my country says I can, the law in your country says no. I don't bootleg my discs, despite many lucrative offers to do so. SPIN will just have to live with it.
