Do you let the same singer sing a particular song twice or even thrice in the evening? What is your policy on this? I once had this drunk woman want to sing NOBODY by Sylvia again after she sang the song just before on her previous turn. I told her she already sang that tune, pick another one, and she got beligerant.
Here's what I did:
I let her sing the song. Then I rallied up the audience and had the crowd cheer for her to SING IT AGAIN! She did. Then I did it again...'Come on, who wants her to SING IT AGAIN!!!' I started up the song and she put the mic down and left. I hate that Sylvia song now.

Wow! I don't know the answer to that one. I've never had anyone want to sing the same song more than once per night. I've had different people sing the same song, but never the same person!

I also have never encountered quite that scenario, but it sounds to me like the way I hope I would handle that same situation. Bravo. We try not to let others sing songs that have already been sung, but sometimes you have to let them if they raise a big enough stink. Just my opinion, I could be wrong. GaryC

That was an interesting way of handling this situation. Did the idea just come to you right there and then?
That situation rarely happens around here, fortunately. The different singers doing the same song is less rare. We handle both situations the same way. It depends on how much time passed since the song was sung. Generally, if it was over an hour, we will let it go if they insist. Otherwise, we tell them no.

Well, I think it depends on how big the rotation is. On slow nights, if one singer has multiple turns in one hour, it can happen that he/she wants to do a song again in order to "practice" it if he/she didn't get it right the first time around. I also did this myself once, with a German version of "Summertime" I wrote, where the number of verses didn't correspond with the version in that venue, so I re-wrote it and tried it again later that night. Anyway, if you're in the situation that you're likely to run out of songs entered if you don't play everything they want, I'd do it.

When I go over the House Rules at my venues, one of the things I let people know is that I have a "3-hour" rule, stating that once a song has been sung, it cannot be sung again for at least three hours, with one exception: "Stairway to Heaven" ONCE A NIGHT ONLY!!! I have found for the most part that the only people trying to sing a song they sung once before fall into the "drunken sot" category.(instant idiot-just add alcohol!)
I also applaud you, Dale, for the way you handled that situation. Granted, you may have chased her away permanently, but in the long run, think of all the stress you have saved yourself!!

I mostly get people who want to come in early and do a song they feel they do well, then do it again when the crowd gets there. People don't usually want to do a song that someone else has already done, unless they want to show they can do it better. It happens at times. True story; Once a girl was singing a Crystal Gayle song. During the song a huge fight broke out in the bar, one of the worst I have ever seen. There were pool sticks flying, beer bottles flying, knives, sticks, some guy even rode his motorcycle inside the building. There was blood everywhere. When the song was over, she screamed in the mike that nobody was paying attention and "I'm gonna do it again, and this time ya'll better listen up, you are missing a good song!" She turned around and demanded I play it again. Not in the arguing mood, I played it and she sang while the police were placing handcuffs on everyone. She stormed off stage afterwards mumbling something about how people should show some respect for the singer and pay attention!!!!

D.J. Dale, Congragulations to you, I had the same problem about a year ago, this drunken S.O.B. wanted to sing Joy To The World, over and over again, everytime he got up to sing, it was the same song--- Jeremiah was a bullfrog,---- Let me tell you what I did, I honered his request, but everytime he got up to sing, I would turn his mic down lower and lower, eventually during the third try at it, he was screaming so loud to hear himself, he lost his voice. After that, he finally got the applause we were all after, haven't heard from him since.

Angela, Your story made me laugh, though I wouldn't want to have witnessed that episode.
I have thought about singing the same song twice in one night, but never have. It's kind of like having only one piece of delicious cake, not the whole cake. You can have a second piece when you return to the show.

LOL...you are so right Billy! I could tell so many stories of this nature. Sometimes it seems like being a KJ, you get to meet so many different people and see some pretty strange stuff at times. Maybe we should start a thread where we can each tell some of the wild things we have seen at karaoke! Angela
