SC is going to go back to the catalog stuff?
after seeing the first 2 discs it dawned on me...This era of music just isnt that good. The one I liked is Seether's cover but I bought that track a couple weeks ago through an overseas manu. as I dont wait around for something when its available
Very few songs I do like now likely will not be released so whats the point? can you atleast inform me when you are gonna attempt to release the older stuff and special stuff again.
Thanks

With all due acknowledgement to Sound Choice's gradual return and the need to be patient, I'm with Showtime.

You're just figuring this out now??? There is a reason alot of the 80's bands are out on tour this year (other than maybe needing the money)its because that is music. The old new gets sung WAY MORE than the newer music here.

I have a sense that,at the least, John is with us but has some new business model prerequisites that need to get done first. After the release of some new stuff he can point some his colleagues to some free market data under any of the "Tell Us What You Are Singing" threads. That may help. I'm pretty thankful I don't karaoke where you guys are.
Used to go to a place where it was mostly old music... hated it. New music is the order of the day where I go now, with old cheese (Journey, Rick Astley, A-Ha) being good for a laugh.
Where I go, if you're doing 90's songs you're going old school.

I say about 5 to 10% of the singers that I host even care about anything new that just came out. It's mainly the younger females that ask for stuff such as new music from Keyshia Cole & Jazmine Sullivan. New stuff for me are only worth buying if you are doing regular private parties that include youngsters that follow the new music. Doing accounts @ locations mainly for guest over 21 would prefer classic tunes to sing. Just this past Saturday @ my gig in Lakewood, there was a guest celebrating here 60th birthday. They had no interest in any new music I played. Once I started playing classic Motown tunes, They were more in tuned. In my opinion, if new music on here comes out 3 to 4 months after another company already released it, sales won't be as good. Since no other company lately has been putting out classic stuff other than maybe a couple of overseas company, I think it's important that Sound Choice get back in the habit to go the classic route again. Here are a few suggestions:
R&B Hits - Vol. 10
Maybe to include original karaoke tracks from Luther Vandross & Earth, Wind & Fire
Party Songs - Vol. 5
Maybe to include original tracks from New Edition & Culture Club
Legends Of The Blues - Vol. 7
Defiantly needs to include original tracks from Johnny “Guitar” Watson
Classic Rock - Vol. 6[/B
Maybe to include original tracks from Toto
[B]Detroit City Soul - Vol. 2
To include original tracks from the Motown era.

I respect we have different tastes in music. To each their own. In the places I go to, the younger crowd does respond to some new music but is also happy to sing some of the older stuff.
World Wyde, I'd happily back Blues, Classic Rock and Detroit City discs.

Our avg age group is 20-40, with more emphasis on the 20's. Very little interest in newer music - mostly in the pop/rock, newer country is another story, LOTS of 80's-90's rock/pop requests being sung & asked for as in 'new' music they want to sing. I keep track of all requests that get asked for (for songs I do not have) 1 out of 20 'new' song requests are for what you would call 'oldschool 90's early 2000's' around here.

Here's the thing, guys. There's nothing we would love more than to be able to do the 99th Beatles song we all love, or more Stevie Wonder. It's just not viable as of April 23rd, 2009.
New music, disposable though it may be, has this going for it - it's new. And there's always going to be more of it, and it's always going to be popular. I can't remember who it was, but some "cool" (read: talented) artist a few years ago responded to a question seeking criticism of Britney, etc. It's a paraphrase, but the answer was something like "Yeah, she sucks. But you know what? The money her crap album generates pays for the making of mine."

I really appreciate a post like this John. Patience, I will continue to display I see your point from a "Business" point of view. I really hope the new stuff becomes lucrative for you. That being said, I wont be purchasing ether of these new disc's. Because of the quality of your product, I am here hoping to get more of the music I am passionate about. Please understand when I continue to request more Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robert Plant, Yeah, maybe Beatles, Doors, Black Sabbath and Ozzy. You will hear requests for Nickelback from me as well. Not exactly old classic rock. I have been waiting along time for a version of "Stranglehold" that is usable. Accually, Id love to see more of Ted Nugents earliest stuff. Its awesome to have someone like you to respond to us John. Thank you!! "It really is, all about the music we love"!!

Only thing I find weird is that most of the requests aren't for newer stuff. I have have a HUGE 20 year crowd & 'new' stuff isn't what they are asking for, they want more from the lat 80's to early 2000's. These are coming from people turning 21 and in the 20's-30's age group. But whatever.....

Where's the new country stuff? One new male country song (that was put out on the other labels 6 months ago)? I'm not interested in purchasing "crap albums" in the hopes that what I'm interested in will get done later, as the comparison to Britney seems to indicate.

...Patience, please.
Speaking for myself, I’ve been patient up to here to still be on this board after others chose to leave. Hang in there John.

I forgot to include Bobby Womack. I would’ve edit it myself, but as you well know they took that feature away from us.

Dan, that story was meant in direct response to the majority opinion here about new music. I didn't mean to insinuate we were going to put out stuff nobody's heard of or anything like that. That would be when we do more Queensryche.
That was a shot at the old school members here, by the way.
Anyhoo, believe it or not, the biggest licensing problems lately have involved male country songs. For whatever reason, there have been lots of smaller publishers involved. But we're trying...

LOL Ha ha so funny!!!!
But atleast us wanting Queensryche would have what you call ummm GREAT TASTE IN MUSIC!
besides Most of the new artists is what I like to call crooks anyways when it comes to being original. Since a majority of the stuff are sampling from our old school stuff!

I think if I were John I might stay out of Missouri for a while
Still trying to find ways around the older music problem, I'll toss out the following: a non-graphic disk with tracks only for some of the artists refusing licensing. I believe it's the lyrics that are the licensing issue, and I seem to recall that SC did a limited edition disc like this once. The disc might have lesser appeal, but there would also be lower licensing and production costs. Other companies have done this, and given the popularity of live band karaoke in some areas, it's not too far fetched. Also, SC would have the tracks available for CDGs if licensing were ever relaxed.
Any takers?

I like it. I have a copy of a very popular karaoke disc that is sans graphics. It makes for great practice at home.

Most music today is a variation of a theme of the great masters, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc, who were influenced by earlier masters.

Well the one thing I don't like about new music is when Chris Cornell sounds like Gwen or Britney..., but having said that, how about "Watch Out" by him?
There's some good new stuff out there.
Black Kids (saw them open for the Pretenders in December)
Can we get some Hollywood Undead
or Let It Die by the Foo Fighters
Even Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden said it live "I'm tired of hearing about my haircut. We are here for the music. We are a band that still puts out new music and we will continue to do, so if we don't play all the old stuff, bugger off!"
Then again, is it possible to get a disc that is mixed with old and new stuff?

People who think new music is crappy, overprocessed, etc, etc probably only listen to the radio.
Unfortunately it's that same stuff that the mass public eats up and loves, therefore it gets massive play.
There are many, many, many uber talented bands out there today that just don't get the recognition. For the most part anyways, some seem to leak through the cracks and get some love. Silversun Pickups, MGMT, and recently The Airborne Toxic Event have all charted well. It's a good trend that I'd love to see continue. Good music on the radio? Sign me up...

I beleive that MGMT got on the cover once of Spin magazine 4 or 5 months ago. Then there is TV On The Radio.
Wilco will be playing the Joint in Vegas in mid-May so somebody knows them. Okay, not huge but a nice size place. Wilco sold just under 600,000 copies of their Yankee Hotel Foxtrot cd and have won a couple of grammys.
