I believe 'Guitar Hero' uses original tracks (many of which are edited or remixed to feature the guitar parts).
A game on the level of Guitar Hero doesn't have any use for sound-a-likes, because they use the real thing. And, those sell through numbers allow them to pay for the real thing. Same with other mega selling games, whether they pay for music popular with the game demographic, or pay to have original music recorded for those games. (Halo 3 - $170 MILLION on the first day of sales.)
[My boys and their friends have been playing Guitar Hero for a couple years now. At first they thought they were discovering something new, until some of their friends told them it was all music from their parents' generation. Then, they got interested in all this older, guitar based music, and have asked to learn how to play many classic rock songs. So they became interested in, and recognize, some songs from Boston, GNR/Slash, Ozzy and others, from Guitar Hero.
Of course, they think that Avenged Sevenfold and Dragon Force/Herman Lee rule, so I take that with the acknowledgement of a exponential generation gap.
When kids today take guitar lessons and want to learn single note riffs and solos, the teachers typically have to go back to the classic rock of the 60's and 70's, and the metal rock of the 80's. But, if you go to Guitar Center or Sam Ash you will always hear some shredder playing endless scales up and down without ever stopping to breath. (That's what Herman Lee sounds like, although it is breathtaking for a minute or two, especially with the computer program enhancement of perfect time for each and every bar of speed metal time travel.]
By definition, Guitar Hero is designed for people who don't know how to play guitar, but want to feel the guitar hero adrenaline rush, and it has nothing to do with real ability - kind of a variation on the 'air guitar' silliness. When I played a real guitar while they were playing the game, they looked over momentarily with bored indifference (probably a comment on the ability more than anything). The kids didn't really understand what it took, or weren't interested in working enough to learn - the game provided the buzz they were looking for.

Gaming, Music Industry Relationships Mature; Terms Shift
Record-setting, first-day sales of Halo 3 offered the latest evidence of an exploding gaming industry, one that frequently eclipses film and other forms of media. But are labels and artists still poised to capture a piece of the windfall?
According to one top publisher, gaming giants are now recognizing their strength, and lessening payouts to labels accordingly. "They realized the value of their games, and how many people hear a song over-and-over again," said John Anderson, a top executive at Windswept Music Publishing, in comments at the 2007 Music Business Seminar in Los Angeles this weekend.
Indeed, the promotional value of that exposure is immense, especially given the number of distractions that the typical consumer experiences in a supersaturated media landscape. But those distractions seem to melt away in a gaming world characterized by focused attention and interactivity. Meanwhile, Anderson was quick to point to an in-house label effort triggered by Electronic Arts (EA), a collaborative effort involving Nettwerk Music Group.
Of course, exceptions are what make the game exciting, and bigger stars and writers can still attract large payouts and lucrative deals. Others would be foolish to judge deals too heavily on their upfront potential, especially given the massive promotional exposure that a popular title can deliver.

I know that the Madden games have a lot of songs on them. Also, Danny Elfman wrote the theme for Fable for one of these games.

GH is a blast. A karaoke buddy of mine put me onto it a few months ago and I now have all 3 GH games.
At a house party last Saturday night - about 90% karaoke and 10% GH. Some of the guys wouldn't sing alone, but they were happy to try GH in front of 30 people. Too funny!

Actually, BC, I have read at some game sites that GH doesn't use the real tracks for all of the songs. If memory serves correct, the Primus track from GHII was the first to actually feature the original music. GHIII will include many more original artists. In fact, the remaining members of the Sex Pistols were brought into the studio to re-record Anarchy In The UK since the masters no longer existed. Activision and Neversoft is promoting a short Sex Pistols tour starting in November.

yep. They do record 90% of the tracks themselves... bonus features in the game show them in the studio recording their songs.

Yeah, I have "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" and I consider it the easiest game in the series. My comfort level is "hard" on the other games but I can get by on "expert" with this one. Nice selection of songs though.

Some people are more comfortable playing instruments (real or video game ones) than singing. The piano is my main instrument, and for a long time I was much more comfortable doing that in front of people than singing. To some degree, I still am. But over the years, I've developed a love for singing and have become comfortable with it (and after a few years of voice lessons, I got to where I could hear myself on tape without gagging ).

I've been playing GH and Rock Band as much as I can, even started offering it at my shows as the demand started to grow, and other shows in the area started doing the same thing. They really are addicting, I think more so than karaoke, just because of the whole rock guitarist thang.

Well I am the loser at this game. I cannot beat my son and last night we played so much and he was in expert mode and I was in easy and I still couldn't pull it off. I'm sure it didn't help drinking jaeger bombs and car bombs. My ex-husband says he won't play Levi anymore cause he's too good. Anyways Tim had alot of fun playing so something good came out of it.
