I'm noticing in various places that people are wanting more from individual artists. I wholeheartedly agree. For example, you released a Power Picks on Jim Croce, but you could surely tack on another seven songs of his amd release a complete spotlight? (If you don't KNOW seven more songs worthy of karaoke-izing , I'm sure we, the teeming masses can assist you..such as "Roller Derby Queen".) Rockin' Rebecca mentionsed Cat Stevens..I can list a few of his that would be worthy.. *gets up on a soapbox* PEOPLE! SOUNCHOICE IS LISTENING! DEMAND YOUR MT..oh, sorry..wrong chant..LET'EM KNOW WHAT YOU WANT, WHAT YOU REALLY, REALLY WAAT! ----------------------------- to that list of singer-songwriters, May I add a couple to the list.. Blues Brothers-ya got TWO soundtracks and two albums worth of materiol..All Hits did some, but I say you can do it better.
Dan Fogelberg-keep bugging him, he'll release his stuff..
John Denver Bob Marley (more, please...) Jimmy Buffett (you dind't think I'd let this one slide, did you?) Joe Diffie Alan Jackson WEIRD AL YANKOVIC! YEAH! Ray Charles Gordon Lightfoot ZZ Top Huey Lewis & the News (Yes- he still has fans out there!) David Bowie Genesis (and maybe their solo projects, too) The Rolling Stones (bury that Backstage! Ick) Umm..Billy Joel?
*whew* any others out there? ladies, perhaps? I don'tlisten to enough female artists ('cept Indigo Girls and Carly Simon) thanks all!

RC, I know I am beating a dead horse, but, hell, I need the exercise! What we need is for SC to let us create our own custom disks. I have offered $10.00 per song, which some felt was too high. I don't. I would gladly pay $150.00 for a my own Spotlight, plus shipping and handling and coupon for a free hamburger at Carl's Jr.!
Now, here's the way I see it: Either Sound Choice feels they would LOOSE money selling songs for $10.00 each or they feel it is just too much trouble. If they don't want to mess with the hassle of creating a disk, perhaps they could license Custom Karaoke to handle that end of it.
Personally, I would rather see them produce disks with only five songs on it and sell it cheaper. I would rather buy a $14.99 disk with only one song I want on it than buy a $29.99 disk with only one song on it I want.
I don't mean to gripe. I am 75% pleased. If they never change, I can live and be happy. But custom disks is the answer to everyone getting exactly what they want and none of what they don't.

Another way of dealing with the 1 good song only problem maybe splitting up the pop and rock discs, more single artist only discs (spacing out what seems to be the country artist only star series with more male/ female only hits, and some more non-country artists/groups), more specialty discs like Classic Rock, Headbanger Hits, and Mama.
Some artist song requests-

Another good way of getting past the one song only problem is,if your good friends with the KJ, buy that disc for them for Birthdays, Christmas, whatever. If you don't know or can't sing 14 out of 15 songs maybe somebody in the crowd might be able to make some use out of them.

Yes, it's kind of annoying having to buy the entire CD for only one song. In fact, last week I was trying to find Whoomp! There It Is, and I had to decide between 4 manufacturers. Even though I really wanted the SoundChoice version, that CD had too many female songs on it. I went with the discontinued DK disc instead.
If they could at least split up more male/female discs, I think that would help the individual buyer (I don't think KJ's mind as much).

I agree that discs should be divided up by male and female artists if Sound Choice wants to draw in more sales from karaoke singers. KJ's have to buy songs for both males and females so it shouldn't make a difference if they buy one disc with female artists and one disc with male artists as opposed to two discs with both. A singer, however, buys discs for himself or herself only. I think single artist Spotlight discs are also a great idea. Billy Joel, Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow are among my votes. Don't forget to include songs that aren't already available. Or, put together artists with similar sounds / singing styles. Melissa Etheridge and Janis Joplin would be a great combo. Personally though, I'd rather have a full disc of each.

My suggestions for artist spotlight discs (and yes I am aware that obtaining the rights and/or interest in the artist is a factor) Bruce Springsteen Lou Rawls Joe Cocker Jerry Lee Lewis

Yes. Keep putting out the Melissa Etheridge tunes. And PLEASE include "Unusual Kiss". That would be a great karaoke song. Please.

Alayne, I agree with Rockin Rebecca, you got some real taste in music! Mine runs more to classic country than hers does, but Melissa Reaches, you know? Don't do any good to sound like a harp unless there's a soul in there somewhere! Love, vickyone Geezer, you like Styx. There's a couple variations of Babe, but you'll never find Crystal Ball or Paradise Theatre because nobody listens to music made 20 years ago in a backstreet 21 track recording studio in Chi-town, (you remember Queen and Boston, don't you) Balloon-a-tic, stop the planet! Or the truck, whichever is easier....You got a sturdy, but flexible taste in music. Turn the radio down, though. HaHa. Where can I get some of those little white music pills?

Okay, here's a small heads-up in response to a few semi-recent postings.
There is a Spotlight coming the first week in January 2000, with 5 songs each from 3 different bands. Two of the artists are Queen and Styx. And one of the Styx songs is "Crystal Ball". I wanted to title this disc "All Together Now: How Hi Can We Sing?", in honor of the vocal histrionics and mega-dramatic productions (they just don't make'em like they used to).
Anyway, we almost killed our background vocalists, and they did a really great job. I'm very curious how this is going to be received out there in karaoke world. I think this is a fun disc for singers. Even though they are all great male rock bands, the vocals are usually in the upper range of the keys, and female singers can probably jump in there, too. One of the cardinal rules of rock production, used to be to have the singer at the top of his/her vocal range in the chorus of the song. It still applies for Whitney, Celine, Mariah, but first the punk, then the grunge bands, and then the ascension of Country music (where the range of the male singers is typically more limited), toned things down a bit. But in the early days of hard rock and metal bands, and then the hair-band power ballads, man, if you weren't on the verge of a hernia, the key just wasn't high enough.
So, we're all interested in how the multiple artist/single genre concept is going to be received. The possibilities are endless, and Courtney and I are coming up with an all female disc with the same idea (so cool your jets, ladies).
Secondly, yes, it's True, we are releasing a Weird Al Star disc. Also in the first week of Y2K. And since that's all I'm saying about it, I guess that's called a teaser. Later.
P.S. - Vickyone, many of the early Queen and Styx songs were recorded on 16 Track, not 24. But that's nothing. "Sgt. Peppers..." was recorded mostly on 3 and 4 track machines, and "Good Vibrations" was recorded on 8 Track machines. Now, that's not to say ONLY 3, 4, 8 or 16 tracks were used. They 'bounced' tracks down. For instance, on "Good Vibrations", Brian Wilson could record multiple tracks (3,4,5,6), then bounce them down to 1 or 2, and start over again. Anyway, I'm still listening to some of those old, anachronistic recordings that have incredibly moving and powerful music in the grooves.

I wouldn't mind some more Carly Simon either. There's a really good edgy song on her "Come Upstairs" album - "In Pain". I also like "Two Hot Girls (On A Hot Summer Night)" and "No Secrets" from her Coming Around Again and Greatest Hits album respectively.

I also see that some Dolly Parton has been requested. I heard recently heard her cover of Billy Joel's "Traveling Prayer". I liked it a lot and would really like to sing it. I'm not sure when she released that cover, but I heard it on the radio just last month.

Thanks in advance for the upcoming female Spotlight disk - I know it will be a good one!
Alayne,
I haven't heard the Dolly version of "Traveling Prayer" but I love Billy Joel's rendition. Surely we could make room on a karaoke disk for at least one if not both versions of this classic!
