This is simply the flip side of the other topic. I'm wondering if we are biased to noticing the badly delivered stuff...

On a more serious note... would like to point out that if (in the KJ Forum) we are gripping that the patrons don't 'get it' when a good show is delivered... and they only notice if you crash...
And we have two pages of posts on how the patrons crash, and silly fluff on how they rock...
Are we any different?

It's human nature. A study I remember from back in the 1970's when a parton went to a resaurant and had great service, they would tell 1 or 2 people. When they got crappy service, they told 8-10.

Ya know…we as kjs are often in awe of just how much talent there is out there. The "average" government worker who just belts out Unchain my Heart, the mother of 3 who delivers the most awesome Midnight Train to Georgia, the realestate agent who sounds like Elton John wishes he could…
Actually, my point on the "are we the same?" crack was not to chew anyone out - but to make the point that if you're getting the Rodney Dangerfield treatment (no respect) - well, that doesn't mean people don't think you rock, they just don't bring it to mind habitually.
On Pony's post - I will confirm, having just spent 3 hrs at one of their other gigs - that the "Guy who sings like Elton wished he could" does, in fact exist. I have also learned that a baritone can sing Alanis (granted not in the same octave)...
In 3 hours, not a single wince. Not one. Kudos to the guys at Bottoms Up!

Awwww Matt...that's so sweet! Diane, you are so loved
we just crawled in from our Wed night show (the boys pitched in for overtime)... really glad binary joined us tonight - he got to see many more of the performers mentioned above.
How many of you have multitudes of amazing singers/performers?
Now...all this talk about GREAT singers has me wanting to back peddle too...coz' we really pride ourselves on helping and encouraging first timers/newbies/virgins and supporting and encouraging those who need that little extra TLC to bring 'em along. I am thrilled that so many WILL get up even in the wake of so many mind-blowing talented people.
We've never had anyone boo'ed or jeered, our patrons are wonderful! We are blessed!
Once, only once did we have a very drunk and horribly obnoxious woman loudly demand that I pull a singer because they were "terrible"...I told her she was very rude and that if she did not "play nice" she would not be allowed to sing. Well...she chose to play nice
Pony's goin' to pasture

Slightly different tack... as a late comer, was reading some of the more inflamed posts that have been closed off (good ridance) - and thought to myself... songs people should sing to develop and elevated sense of well-being, hope and respect... - Rainbow Connection, Kermit the Frog - Love is the Answer, England Dan & John Ford Coley - Skinny Ma Rinky Dink, Various Children - Get Together, Youngbloods (or the Chris Gaines remake, "Right Now") - All I Need is the Air that I Breathe, best version is the cover by K.D. Lang - Tomorrow, from Annie - Black and White, Three Dog Night (or Michael Jackson's as well)
Any other hopeful, heartful tunes you can think of?

Booed or jeered? I suppose I have been. I know for sure that at one place I frequented years ago, I had the following happen to me while I sang:
*Whacked with a plastic baseball bat (lightly) *chased around the room by someone else who wanted to whale on me with same bat (mind you, I was SINGING at the time!) *had stuff thrown at me (change, balled-up napkins) *verbal abuse *threats to have my a-- kicked (this table of four hecklers started on me, one of 'em eventually made a cross with his fingers. I returned half of the cross to him--you know which half--and he got up and threatened to kick my a--, I told him to sit down and shut the hell up!)
I'm sure I can think of more. It wasn't easy to be a bad singer back then, and it still isn't easy, but at least I have a few songs I can sing fairly well. Problem is, I just don't sing 'em all the time (always need to try different songs--I like too many different songs!!).
Best,
Mark

i don't know if you guys have access, you should, but I copied and pasted the text here! Should answer your question Mark!
Matt ======== Wow, another GREAT night, AFTER the rival organization left the bar. Had a table of heckers, and they didn't respond very well to my suggestions and eventual commandments that if you wanted to heckle ANYBODY, it was me as the KJ, not the singers.
Carol thinks that with how tired I was from working my primary job that day, that I wasn't as subtle or wasn't mentally ready for the challenge of a ruly bunch of bikers. She's probably got a point.
At any rate, it did my heart good to have a WHOLE bar back me up when things got out of hand. A bit intimidating to have not only ONE guy stand up to get in your face and belly bounce you back a bit using quite colorful colloquialisms, but when their ol' ladies jump up, and the other dude as well... the only thought that came up to me was, "Oh-kay, I don't want to go to jail, and these a****les want to fight!"... so I put my hands up, walked away, let the last singer finish, and then I played regular music for an hour until they got ****ed off enough to leave. I KNEW if I got into a tiff with one of them, soon their whole club would be in there stirring up trouble.
Taffy the bartender had cut them off at my insistance (she said they bitched about the food, the drinks and the karaoke, and as they weren't regulars, then it wasn't a big thing.)
It upset me in the fact I knew if I got into it with them, I was afraid I might have to seriously injure or even kill one of them. I realize how harsh that sounds, but many of the bar patrons agreed with my analysis of the situation later. It looked like a full-blown bar fight WAS going to happen.
I think I handled it right. I responded openly to the man when he yelled across the room that I was a coward. Even his buddy agreed with me I wasn't, when I walked right up to him and told him he wasn't scaring or intimidating ANYBODY, but I refused to let them treat my customers that way.
Anyway, I'll keep a close watch on the situation. Sure was a great feeling when not only we turned the night around, we had a blast all the way to 12:30.
Take care!
Matt

Reminds me of the episode of Quantum Leap, where Sam (Scott Bakula) lept into himself at 16 yrs old, and sang that song to his younger sister to prove that he really was from the future, which was a major mistake! Anyway, there's Scott singing this while plucking away on the guitar, and Dean Stockwell as "Al" singing next to him... both loving the song for their own reasons.
As do I!
Matt

Knightshow, OMG! I remember that episode! LOL hey, when I hear "Imagine" I now think of the guy on Your Big Break that nailed that song. The transformation was shocking and his impersonation of John Lennon was uncanny! He did win of course! I still have that episode on VHS somewhere... Sure do wish that Dick Clark productions would have kept that show. I miss it. <edited to remove old link>

heheheh! Not a problem kiddo! LOVED having you there! Thanks for bringing in Sarah.
Did you hear the bad news? I THINK I told you, but you know how it is with us old, bald men!!! Taffy, the barkeep, has only two weeks left. This is making me accelerate my plans to get "my place " going out of the remains of "Jack's Place"!!
I'll be talking with the owner later today. Wish me luck!!
Diane... you're too sweet! I actually thought it funny you didn't know about that posting... made it all the better for everyone here that you didn't know I hang on your every word!
