My sister can't take her fiance's snoring anymore. She's making him get an operation! They're removing his tonsils. And, while they're at it, they're going to fix something about his septum so he can breathe better (he claims he can't breathe out of one nostril).
Now, the problem is that he happens to be a great singer and has taken opera lessons and the whole bit. He wants me to take him out practically every night for Karaoke until the day of the operation because he's afraid he won't be able to sing anymore.
So, does anyone know how these two things could affect your singing ability? My sister claims he doesn't sing through his nose, so that shouldn't affect anything... but I'm not so sure. Of course, he should limit his voice for the next month or so after the operation, but what about after that?
Thanks!

Well, I'm sure that l'opera voce will be able to field this one more succinctly, but I'll give it a shot... Getting the tonsils out won't do a thing,'cept make your voice sore for a few days...the septum repair? I would guess that it might affect his timbre in his nasal mask, but it would merely be a little bit of alteration of vowel color..nothing tough to get over.. I wish him luck! I was diagnosed with apnea, so I wear a little mask at night that puffs extra air into my system...what a change that has made..

What does his doctor say about it? That would probably be his best resource.
I have a different problem but also may take a risk on becoming permanently hoarse. I have a hernitated cervical disk and may require surgery. They operate through the front of your throat to reach the vertebrate in your spine. They need to stretch the vocal cords out of the way and this is what can cause either temporary or permanent hoarseness.
It's a very scary decision to have any surgery that may affect your voice. Having had my injury for over three years and experiencing pain every day, it's possible that I may have to make the decision to have the surgery.
I hope everything works out for your sister's fiance.

I'm no surgeon, but I know plenty of people who have had their tonsils out. No effect on their voice in that operation. Deviated septum. . . hmmm. If he's truly only breathing from one nostril, then he will definitely have some new vocal coloration with the opening of the new internal echo chamber, but it shouldn't harm the quality of sound at all.
Again, this is all theory based on a little knowledge of physiology. I could be utterly ****ed in the head in regard to the latter.

Afrin works great for clearing up the nasal passageways. I use it all the time to help me breathe easier.

I can't pronounce it nor spell it, but I have had the operation done on me to control my snoring as well as my sleep apnea. I also had my uvula (little punching bag looking thing in the back of your throat) removed. Very painfull procedure, However my snoring has decreased and I no longer stop breathing or wake up choking.

I forgot to post that my throat felt funny for about a year but my singing ability has returned to normal. My voice has even gotten stronger. Grateful, if your sisters fiance smokes it would be best to stop. It just makes recovery so much easier. I can't speak for him but his fears about not getting his voice back for singing are warranted. With any surgery there are risks and very little guarantees. Goodluck to him and godspeed.
