Does anybody experience singing difficulty because of the type of food you had eaten? I didn't realize it at first but after a while I can notice that if I eat pizza or gasy food before I go out for karaoke I tend to burp during the measures of the songs. I wait for the rests to do it so I don't burp while I am singing.. LOL that sounds so funny..
I also find that drinking water helps my throat stay nice so I can sing comfortably. Water has nothing to do with the burping though. lol

I usually do my eating well before heading out to karaoke. But if I must eat shortly before singing, I stay away from the greasy foods because they clog up my throat.
When bars serve that trail mix, I avoid the peanuts. I would not say this effects singing, but it is just so annoying to sing with stuff caught in your teeth.

I remember drinking one of those icecream type drinks after dinner and having trouble with high notes. Never again. Over eating causes problems, especially foods with garlic. (burp-excuse me)

Dairy foods may cause mucous to build up in your throat. I've also heard that really spicy foods have an effect as well.
One time I was singing at a place called Meximilian's, and I had a few tortilla chips that my friend had ordered. I got up to sing "Patches" by Clarence Carter, and I wound up coughing through most of the song because some crumbs from the chips got stuck in my throat! LOL!
I would say be careful of what you eat before you sing.
Best,
Mark

Most foods mixed with carbonated beverages can lead to those annoying (embarassing?) moments on the mic. Saturday afternoons, I drop into my regular karaoke bar after playing golf, and usually have a bite to eat as well. I try to have a glass of water handy before I sing. Not only does it calm the acid in your stomach, it also washes down any particles that might make it to the front table on one of them 'belt it out' type of songs.

A bit of advice from one who knows, Hot Wings and karaoke do not mix. As much as I love a burning hot wing, the hot sauce did some yucky things to my voice.

YUM! I go to Sam's and buy those Tyson buffalo wings. They are great! But, above, I was talking about Tyson mesquite grilled chicken breasts. I usually heat up a couple of those and they hold me until after I sing.

Another word of warning.... Stay far away from my wife's meat loaf before Karaoke. Very, very bad. GaryC

Dante, It is definitely the results of having eaten the meat loaf. It's great until about three hours later. You've seen me, surely you can imagine how big my doghouse is. Having been there plenty of times, it is defintely bigger than my first apartment. GaryC

LOl! These postings are funny! I hate when you have been eating at karaoke and have food stuck in your molars (nacho chips are famous for this) and then they come out in your mouth in the middle of singing. It's like, what do I do with it now?

Oh GAWD!!! Ya just reminded me, Connie!I remember attending a show years ago, where they rolled out a sandwich bar (like a salad bar 'cept with sammich fixin's). Well, I was called up to sing, so I grabbed a mic. It was about then that I noticed a piece of...something...on the windscreen. I kinda gave it a weird look, and , with the mic open said "Ooo...a booger!". Well, this put the KJ into hysterics, while I grabbed the OTHER mic and he grabbed the Lysol! I later surmised the foreign object as a piece of chewed bread that musta popped out of the previous singer!

Daron, If they rolled out a sandwich bar at my show(and my wife wasn't in charge) we'd have to take a little break and play some dance music until I got the bar inspected and gave it my vote of approval. GaryC

Kimmy, that's a very good question, because I always felt that eating very light before you sing is the answer. It may not be the right one, but it works for me!! I also believe that eating greasy foods is going to give you gas on stage while your singing, believe me it's happened a few times!!(maybe even both kinds of gasses!!!lol!!)But seriously, I've always felt that if you feel good on stage, All the better in your performance!!

Another reason it is wise to eat light before singing is because a full stomach can make it uncomfortable to reach down for the really "fat" breaths. I am a "power" singer who needs the room down there to fill with air so I can hold notes forever and get the rich full sound I am known for. Another tip for those of us who are carrying a couple of extra pounds in our midsection (10 or so)..don't wear painted on jeans or anything really restrictive. Wear something you won't be afraid to puff out your gut in (blazers are fantastic as well as vests) because I know there is nothing more uncomfortable than trying to belt out a song while sucking in your gut...not the way to get your best sound! Perhaps this is why I don't sing as well in contests, because I am always so concerned with looking sexy and thin.
