Hi all, In my quest to add a little spice to a mid week Karaoke night, I created a new game and we had a blast with it last night... Karaoke Tag Each singer selects a song for their turn in the rotation. (being creative in song selection is stratigic, I got three points for Van Halen's "Icecream Man")
Each singer starts singing their song.
The singer gets 3 points if they start and finish a song.
The first singer of a song gets zero points if they are tagged.
Other singers can tag the person currently singing the song. They then take over singing the song. The singer that tags gets a point.
A singer must continue with a song until they are tagged or the song is over to earn the point(s).
The current singer must complete either a verse or a chorus before it counts as a point.
The current singer must be allowed to finish either a verse or a chorus before they can be tagged.
A singer can only sing once in the same song.
The singer with the most points at the end of the rotation wins.
Folks, I decided to try this last night for a rotation, and the people had so much fun with it that we went three rounds. The bar kept coming up with cheesy prizes (T shirt, Mug), with the final prize being a round for all the singers. People that didn't sing had just as much fun as the singers. As a ploy, during one song when someone came to tag me, I played dodge for a few seconds.
Anyone else have some fun things to try to spice things up a bit?

I'm not a kj, but one place I go has Karaoke Survivor once in a while. On the nights they have that, I avoid it like the plague, so I can't really tell you what it's like. LOL! I'm a pretty decent singer, but I would be nervous about people voting me off their team! Some of the places where I go have the "American Idol"-type contests, but I don't enter them--in fact, I usually don't even go there on those nights.
They also do trivia once a week where people are on teams. I have done that, and it's fun. And it doesn't take away from the karaoke. The kj asks the question, and the teams try to figure out the answer (and write it down and hand it to the kj) while the next person is singing.
I go to another place that sometimes has trivia contests where the kj plays part of a song and you have to tell the title, the artist, and (this is the killer for many of us) the year it came out. I actually won a free drink in one round of that game, but other than that, I wasn't too thrilled about the game, because they did 3 or 4 rounds of it that night and it took time away from the karaoke. I wanted to sing some more, and to hear other customers sing some more!!! *throwing self on floor and kicking feet* I know there were other people there that night who also would have liked to hear and do more karaoke. (The last few times I was there for karaoke, though, the same kj was there and he didn't have the trivia game. I know there are some nights when he just plays music and there's no karaoke, so maybe he does it on those nights now.)

I don't blame you for avoiding it. Singing should be fun, and it's more fun if we don't feel like we are being judged. I think that is what was fun about this game. A singer could take over if they knew the song, but didn't have to. Some people sang parts of songs very well, and they had never tried them before. So two people want to try these songs next time out. That was a plus I didn't even think about before hand. I had planned to only do this one round. I didn't want it to go on too long. But ALL the singers wanted to do it more. One guy won two out of the three rounds. I gave him the "Mike Hog of the Night" Title... We are know each other so it made the game a little easier. I wouldn't try something like this on my "party weekend" nights.

Mike Hog? Sounds like that should be the name of Boss Hogg's son (only with 2 G's in the last name). LOL!

I made a large wheel (about 18" diameter) like a "Crown & Anchor" game at a carnival. I had a friend in the car detailing busines cut some vinyl numbers from 1 through 30 and a big skull like the "Punisher Logo". On nights that we play the "Wheel Of Death" Gilly & I pick some fun songs (Immigrant Song, TipToe Through the Tulips, etc) really off the wall stuff and anyone who wants to play comes up and spins the wheel. They then have to sing the song that the wheel stops on. It's a hoot and a lot of times people you you never figure to do that song will wind up nailing it.

there's a freeware program out there for karaoke bingo for those of you using a computer at your shows...
Or you could go old school and have the ball cage... either way would work and work well. After every singer, call out the number... make certain to track the numbers on your own sheet!!
Have your pages created with the freeware program, or others you can buy. You can customize the pages to have the page be for 1 free drink, $$ off your tab, etc.
Participation would be either pay per page, or with those that have "gambling" laws that prohibit that, you could go for "free", and have reduced prizes...

"Casino Royal". It's a variation we play on suicide karaoke, but it's more random than someone just putting up Brittany Spears for someone as a suicide joke.
We have slips in a tin with our CD numbers on them (ie. 101, 102...530, etc). The customer draws a number from this tin and that becomes his cd number (Example: 436). Gilly and I then deal the singer two cards from an overside deck and that becomes the track number using standard BlackJack rules. Let's say the client gets delt a 8 and an Ace. He can choose either 9 or 19 and that becomes his song (CD# 436, Track 9 or 19). Then they have to sing it.
Ususally when we do these special nights we get prizes from the bar for the best overall performances.
Gilly (my fiancée) really comes up with great games & ideas to keep the show fresh. I'll share some more later.
Michael (Mick)
