I'm saying this because lately I've been seeing some KJ's taking new singers as late as 15 before the end of the show...and, as a singer, this is very annoying. Nothing is more annoying then when I've been waiting for 2 hours to sing and some guy walks in the door and he's up and I've been sitting there for 2 hours for pretty much NOTHING.

When I host, depending on how many singers I have, I will stop taking new singers around an hour before the show's over. What I don't want is someone to sing twice in that time period. If this is going to happen, I will usually go up to people who had tried to ask about a song and see if they would still like to sing.

How do y'all usually handle this?

I don't set a specific time when I stop taking requests, it truly depends on the night. The busier the night, the less likely a latecomer will have a chance to sing.

I'm of the school of thought that if you're gonna stay all night and spend money at our club, you have priority over late night bar-hoppers. I make enough money at the gig, so I don't want a bribe either. It really offends me when someone thinks they can throw their money around to get up faster.

Sometimes I can get the late-comer up before last call, sometimes not, but I'll always let the potential singer know that if they can't get up tonight, I'll be back next week. They can try and get there earlier next time.

Same here, no specific time, I gauge by how many slips I have up & go by that. If i'm at an hour before close & I have an hours worth of singers i'll stop taking slips. There have been times when i've stopped almost 2 hours before close then other times it's been maybe 1/2 hour to 15 minutes. All depends on the crowd that's there for the evening. One thing I DO do is try to leave myself a little leeway to get a couple singers that HAVE been there all night spending money back up - letting them know that I am not taking anoymore slips but will try. Usually I can squeeze them in & it makes them feel a little special.

Mine is a pretty straight forward "new singers at the bottom of the current rotation".

Since I figure on an average of 3.5 minutes per song, when it gets to an hour or half-hour before the end of the show I'll calculate the singer's chances of getting to sing before the show ends and let them know they may not get to sing before the show ends. Sometimes people leave and that singer who had no chance in hell might get to sing a couple songs in the last hour.

My rotation is similar to yours. I have the rotation rules printed on the back of my books. It is the luck of the draw, as to where the current rotation is, whether a new singer gets to sing. If the current rotation is close to the end, and I see that the new singer can get in, I will take it. When I stop taking requests, it's for everyone. One thing I don't want is to turn away a singer, to have them see another singer sing twice before the end of the night.. Sometimes, if it's iffy, I'll tell them that I'll hold the request but they may not make it in but I'll do the best I can.

We'll take a slip and tell them there is no guarantee that they will get up. If they do they do if not we tell them to come earlier in the evening.

Everything does depend on how busy the night is. If it's a light night, I'll get a new person in for a song right away, even if it makes them the last song of the night. If it's a regular night then no new requests will be honored 30 minutes prior to the end of the show. I do take the slips though, apologize that there may not be enough time to get the song in, and let them know when and where we're at so they can come out again, hopefully earlier.

I'm never nasty about it, always apologetic, which makes them feel even more special. [Wink]

Exactly! We always take the slip, sometimes there are walk-aways (or falldowndrunks) and they'll get slipped in. They're always reminded to come earlier next week to guarantee a song.

We are pretty much the same as the rest of you.
If we have enough singers who have been there through the night to finish out the show then no more new singers... This is usually and hour or more before quitting time and; like many of you, never will someone not get in the rotation and hear even one singer twice...

We are more than happy to take their slip. We don't BS them to make them stay, we tell them straight out they may not get up to sing and let them know when we are back again and at what time. Sometimes due to people dropping, someone who had no apparent chance to sing will get to... That's nice when that happens [Smile]
