Any song out there that you've given up trying?
URGENT - FOREIGNER HIGHER LOVE - STEVE WINWOOD
come to mind.
i recently re-sung
FOOLED AROUND AND FELL IN LOVE - ELVIN BISHOP MAN IN THE MIRROR - MICHAEL JACKSON ROLL WITH IT - STEVE WINWOOD
to better results, just wondering if there are songs you really wish you could sing, tried, and yet you come to the conclusion that its just not possible:
URGENT is a great example, i love this song yet, its just impossible.
just askin? thanx

Yo JasonP, ever thought of keying them down? They are both very difficult voices to emulate and both singers have amazing range. I have tried both but they just come out sounding like Alice

I try to sing the songs in the original key, i hate changing keys for the same reasons. i will mention that i often wonder if Kevin Cronin of REO SPEEDWAGON drops his notes, because lets be honest, he has a difficult time hitting those notes of the hits that he helped make famous. That reminds me, ROLL WITH THE CHANGES is another song that is soooooooooooooo difficult.
thanx oh, by the way? anybody out there ever sung STAND TALL - BURTON CUMMINGS?

I can handle "Roll with the Changes," but Jefferson Starship's "Jane" is one that I am not going to try again.

Last time I heard Burton sing Stand Tall, he keyed it down as well. Same as American Woman, and Albert Flasher, and while I'm thinking about it, practically every song he did in the Guess Who show I saw in 2000. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. I don't like to go more than 2 steps though, since it does tend to make the music sound funny, as others say.

Elton keys down now as well - or redoes the melody. Saw him live a couple of months ago - he did Crocodile rock - but had the audience do every single falsetto "Naaah - Na Na Na Na Naaaa"
The issue in keying down in Karaoke is that it is also a tempo change - so once you get out by a tone or so - you have a noticable lag or hurry to the piece.
As well, the harmonic structure of the notes start to shift as you get higher or lower - but you'd have to go half an octave or so to really notice it..

Most good key controllerers are digital and do not speed up or slow down the music.

I don't do too many songs the way they're "supposed" to be done...I'll key down 1-5 or up 1-3 - find a range I like and sing it my way. I actually like keying both the pitch and the tempo down, gives me much more latitude to "play" with a song.
classics stay true: Dream On, Bobby McGee, Because the Night, etc. Love Hurts goes down 1 `coz...well...Love Hurts hurts
