What's the one song that you do, that nobody else sings, and yet, now that you've done it, everybody starts asking if they can do it? Lately, i've been buying lots of discs, to try some rare songs on Karaoke, some songs that i've done that others have either never attemted or rarely ever do are:
COLD TURKEY - JOHN LENNON THE PUSHER - STEPPENWOLF MISS CHATELAINE - K.D. LANG SHE'S A BAD MAMA JAMA - CARL DOUGLAS THE LETTER - JOE COCKER BAD - MICHAEL JACKSON ROLL WITH IT - STEVE WINWOOD
just to name a few, i've basically noticed that several times when attempting such songs, opens an envelope of inquiry of others trying their hand at such songs.
i used to do "BOOGIE ON REGGAE WOMAN", "REMEMBER THE TIME", and several others, until after i started doing them, others would attemt them, some good, some not so good. its a compliment when people sing a song that they were'nt familiar with until it got sung regularly. Hell, i now do a 'PARAODY" of "JEWEL - HANDS" i sing in a childs voice, and say i'm jewel dammit, it gets a standing ovation everytime, i guess my question is, what song have you sung that was Sacred to you then Taken to the masses?

Any of the new rock comes through me first. They're my discs after all so when I move on to the next tunes everyone jumps at my leftovers.

I've always found it funny when a new song everyone has been asking for finally hits your show and no one will try it until you or someone who isn't a regular tries it. After that everyone wants to do the song, as above, good and bad, then nobody does it two weeks later while going back to their old standbys. Go figure ? I've found that many people don't know that they know a song until they here it...see the lyrics...and look it up. A customer begged me for 3 weeks to get the song "I turned 21 in prison". Then somebody else sang "Mama Tried" and he was sooooo happy that I found it for him. Posts: 900 | From: Ottawa, ON Canada | Registered: Dec 2000

speaking for myself, I have HUNDREDS of songs I sing. If someone wants to make a song "theirs", I could care less. That means that either I or someone else encouraged this person to keep doing karaoke.
Egos get in the way here, and in the field of public performance, it is sometimes necessary, but almost always DANGEROUS!
My fiance said it best: "Guys! It's ONLY Karoake!! SHEESH!"
My advice is to shrug your shoulders, consider it a job well done, and move on!

I have no problem with someone singing a song that I often sing. I say "Go for it!" I often get back "Are you sure you don't want to sing it tonight?" LOL... I have tons of songs to sing. I do not own any one song. I also often attempt to sing songs that are just too far out of my range... I REALLY want to sing it but just can't! Then I pass it on to a friend that has a higher voice and help to teach her the song... buy her the cd to practice off of or whatever LOL more power to them! Well, I usually have the new country before anyone at the bar I go to knows it's on karaoke. Generally, I get a good 3 weeks of exclusivity before anyone else either buys the discs themselves, or waits for the KJ to. By that time, I've worn the song's welcome out, and I've moved on to the next batch of new stuff. Kind of like RJ said above about leftovers LOL
"I Wanna Talk About Me" is a good example. I got the song mid-November and sang it every time I was there. The bar got it around New Year's. The song kind of lost it's "wow" factor by then, and I was on to some new Garth, a couple Cledus Judd tunes, "Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning", and the 2 new Canadian discs. Garth is starting to get done a bit now, but there's new stuff of his coming, as well as the Bubba disc. Plus, nobody else there that I have ever seen will do Cledus LOL.
It helps though that my regular bar doesn't keep up to date on the music like all of us regulars do for our own home systems.

There were a couple that I wish I had just a little bit more time for: Smooth, Higher, It's Been Awhile, and Goodbye Earl - I had done all those songs before they were on karaokee by vocal masking. The first few times people didn't know the song, then the song caught on, the song hit karaoke, then everybody and their mother was doing the songs, but like others have said before, there are plenty of good songs out there. Although I do wish someone would do Drops Of Jupiter besides me.

I have an informal policy of not "poaching" a song someone else is doing regularly. If I want to do the song, I'll either do it when they aren't around or at another venue.
Of my stuff the one that really gets me though is when women want to borrow "Light My Candle" from Rent to sing with another guy. However, I'm not going to say sing it with me or not at all.

I don't mind at all if someone sings something that I usually sing, It just keeps me looking for something different. What I really hate is when someone requests us to purchase a song for them,( I try to do this as long as there are other decent songs on the disk) and then that person never sings it. This has happened to us on several occasions. That is why I open purchase them if they have other selections that I think people will like. But, I still kinda ticks me off that the person I originally got it for doesn't even attempt the song they bothered me forever to get for them.

I recognize that many people don't "know" they know a song until they hear someone else so it and say to themselves "hey! I can do that!"
Some of my favorite songs that patrons have heard me do and now have added to their lists: Get Here - Oleta Adams, Bobby McGee, Testify to Love - W. Judd (way cool energy to this one - I find it very uplifting), Heaven on Our Minds - JC Superstar, Have I told you Lately (immediately come to mind).
I don't believe in "owning" songs and never discourage people from doing the same songs on the same nights...but if/when someone sings a song I do I make a point of not "upstaging" them. I'll shelve it for another venue or for when they are not in the house.
