I currently use:
EV R100 wireless headset for myself
Shure SM58 wireless
Shure SM 58
Sampson R11

I am looking to replace the Sampson, it is really a peice of crap. Has anyone used EV N/D 257a or b. I see alot of them for sale on Ebay. I have always had good luck with SM58's, but willing to try anything for better sound.

Any advise will be appreciated.

I prefer the E/V mics (257/357) over the SM-58's. More gain before feedback than the 58's but not quite as durable. Also, I feel that with the 58's, very high timbred voices (screechy) are a touch smoother than with the 257/357's, not quite as bright.

I have had to send a 357 in to E/V for repair in the past four years, but I was not charged other than the shipping to get it there. E/V is good about that. They really stand behind their product. And I bought that mic used to begin with anyway.

Bottom line is...357's are what I use. I have used 58's and I prefer the 357's.

I would like to try the Beta 58's. I'll bet they compare well with the 357's and probably a little more durable.

i prefer the 58's .. you can't go wrong with them, they sound good, they will outlive your business..(i have 14 of them 6 of them are 18 years old and still sound as good as the brand new ones) you can throw them against the wall, run them over...ect and they will still work..although you'll have to replace the windscreen ..lol

I use a Samson Concert series 2 wireless with a sm 58 head and i love it. The 58's are a real good mic for the money. For the show my boss Has us using the EV 2000. Real good mics. I am just personal to the wireless thing. Akg has a new wireless line that is supposed to be killer for around $400 dollars, but i haven't tested that one yet.

I use Peavey 1 mikes, good price and great sound, very durable. One thing, buy a new microphne cord after a year, the cords they come with are not the best. Buy a longer cord than the one with the Peavey 1 for mobile work. My whole sound system is Peavey, except for Unit 1 which I use Audio Technica 300 series wireless mikes. I love them, GREAT sound and reception for me, but may vary with area radio frequencies in other areas (like police, emergency radio's).

Have Sure 58, Audio 200 PPM175, Sennheiser e835 (only for the professional voice). Anybody ever try the Sure Beta 87A? These are corded. I don't particularly care for the bassy Sure 58. I have a wireless Sure 58 and a headset Sure also.

I have a Shure Beta 87 wireless, for myself - I just love it. The SM58 is a pain, trying to turn on and off, and is way too heavy for my tastes. Both UHF.

I have two old diversity Nady/Carvin Wireless mics, one is really good for generic singers, and the other is only good for those people who know how to use a mic - why they are so different I don't know, and the newer ones just are junk (at least the 5 I tried).

I also have a Carvin corded Mic.

I am in the process of moving Mics around between systems, or at least I think I am. I'm going nuts with 5 mics right now.

My second system right now has two Carvin Wireless, and one corded.

I just got a wireless Sennheiser, and it's really nice. Don't think any singer can get far enough away for it to not work.

Lately I have been using some Samson mics (they were on sale) and, for that great oldies effect, a Shure 55s. That sucker is GREAT, and it brings out something in people who sing into it...a lot of people are intimidated by the big metal beastie, but once they get over it, they prefer the 55s...Diputs loaned me a wide base for it, so dropping it is fairly unlikely.

We use sm58s. Max was right when he said they'll take a beetin', falling on the floor, being thrown, etc. They'er practical and sound great.

Dup, we both shop the h*** out of Ebay right?
Grab the Beta 58's there. They are what the music industry uses as a standard!
Good Luck
Al

Larri or anyone else that's tried the Shure 87As,
Is the Shure 87A less bassy than the Shure 58?

The 87A is a great mic, but it's a condenser mic. Condensers are not generally good for karaoke.....especially if you have a lot of monitors near the stage....because of feedback problems. You think feedback is a problem when some idiot wannabe gangsta cups their hand around a regular dynamic mic? Wait 'til they try to do it to a condenser. OY VEY....cover your ears. People are gonna scramble for the doors like a fire drill.

Additionally....87's are also not as durable as the 58 series. If someone drops one (and they WILL, as you know), it's much more likely to screw it up. The works inside condensers are much more delicate than those of dynamic mics, and the 87's don't provide the same level of protection on the outside as the 58's. They were designed more for studio work, and just weren't meant to be abused by amateurs on stage.

Bottom line: 87A's are great for professionals, but not as good for karaoke shows. In my opinion, the cost, durability and feedback issues make them unsuitable for most karaoke applications.

Use a Beta 87A for karaoke only if you bolt it directly to a microphone stand, and bolt the microphone stand directly to the floor or stage.

They sure do sound great though. . .

Kudos to L'Opera and Leigh on the Shure Beta 87A. Too expensive and fragile for karaoke.

Hmm, never gotten any feedback from my Beta 87 even when I played with it and pointed it at the speakers. But only 5 people have used it, and it will remain about like that. Amazing more poeple don't ask to use it, but I have enough mics otherwise.
