************KJ ONLY not a DJ/KJ************

My shows are KARAOKE O-N-L-Y. No DJ filler here. People sing the dance hits. Folks come to my shows for karaoke, not DJ music. They get the dance music from karaoke.

I agree, my regulars would be ticked if we played dance songs. They can dance to someone singing, in fact, I take it as a compliment when people dance when I sing. We run a fast rotation and most of the regulars are already up and waiting when it is their turn. No dance songs here either.

To the kj no dj's: it all depends where your minds at. Most (not all) karaoke singers embraced this concept because it gave them the opportunity to feel and act like a singer of a band or solo artist. to achieve this to the fullest things have to be similar. we have a club atmosphere, a stage, dance floor, dance lights, fog machine, cordless mics, mirrored walls, black lights, disco balls, and eight speakers lining the "club area". We play dj music continuously in between calling up singers to avoid "dead air" though it is not pumped up, and to keep the mood in the lounge up, especially when we have the notorious "slow songs" segments that leaves everyone yawning. we have one to two dance sets where we play up to 3 songs. My belief (though I am not saying is yours is wrong or ineffective)the singer enjoys the extra mile we've gone to make them feel like a star for 3 minutes. and the non-karaoke crowd also is able to enjoy themselves.

Having done both, I can see both sides of this budding issue. I kind of play off of the crowd: When I have no singers, I pump the dance music, and when I have a plethora of singers, I use very little music, save as filler between songs.
One thing that I did fairly succesfully took place where I did a club that wanted more dance music on the weekends, but a little karaoke was fine. I would approach some of my regulars and offer them a chance to do a "set" of four or five songs- just like a band! It got so popular that I turned it into a little audition/contest feature during weeknights to see who would be the up-and-coming spotlight feature the following weekend!

So, you can turn it to your advantage. Patrick (The Leprechaun) does different themes each night at his club, and plays music accordingly (Swing on Jazz nite, etc.)
It's a hoot to see people come up and attempt to stay with the theme- some people even dress up formal for the jazz nights!

RC and Megan,
As I have said before on this forum, there is no right or wrong, no set of rules chiseled in stone for Karaoke. I believe just as you do, if it ain't broke don't fix it. You are entitled to your opinion just as I am. If dance music works for you, cool, it just doesn't work for me.
To each his/her own.

Recommendation for KJ's-

If you are stuck in a Ballad hell, hold a contest in your venue,

"First person to come to me with a fast dance song goes up next without losing their place in rotation."

Problem solved.

This will encourage balladeers to add new depth to their list or they just don't get to play the game.

If you're leery of this, just make sure to define it as a real "Dance" tune (swing, line, hip-hop, etc.) or else you'll get some shmuck like me who would put in Metallica's "Enter Sandman", which while extremely danceable, in a mosh pit sort of way, probably doesn't fit the classic description of dance music.

L'op,
While that may solve ballad hell, it certainly opens up another can of worms when the regular you skip, that just so happens to have been at your last 53 shows in a row and usually always has a bar tab of 50-60 bucks, gets ticked off because you skipped him. While I understand your reccomendation, it's just that it won't always work, no matter how honest the attempt is.
Usually, if I sense a slow night, I'll try to sing fast songs and this usually spins the singers in the right direction.
I've also noticed that when I'm in a particularly blue mood and sing nothing but slow songs, everyone else tends to follow that lead.
Again, I'm not saying you're wrong, it just won't work for every KJ, every time.

Of course it won't work everywhere, especially if you are in a venue where everybody is a singer. However, if you are in a venue where 25% are singers, and the rest watch, those 75% quite often get bored out of their minds if you get locked into a Ballad Hell. In those cases, you might just want to use a Ballad Buster to get those 75% hopping instead of leaving.

If they want country it's Cotton-Eyed Joe. If there are country line dancers they get a singer to sing Boot Scootin Boogie, Watermelon Crawl or Shania's Honey Im Home or Any Man Of Mine for the Canadian Stomp.
Any of the newest hip-hop or dance songs or club remixes of the new songs. For the oldies crowd it's sometimes remixes of oldies like N Trance's Stayin' Alive.

Dead air is the worst. I actually pride myself on my between singer chatter, but piped in music is quite kelpful. Some of my clients have even had me mask the vocals off some tracks and sing the lead themselves, without the lyrics scrolling!! And I play all styles of music between singers not just dance stuff. Depending on the make up of the crowd I play everything from Sinatra to Van Halen. Long live music between singers.
