I'm sure it would work once. . . then one of several things would happen to the KJ. One, he'd get his ass kicked. Two, He'd get thrown in jail for assault with a deadly weapon (believe it or not BB's can kill), Three, The singer would whip out his gun, which shoots a slightly larger round than a BB.

Maybe some of you need to remember "the old days" before we all became bigtime hotshot KJ types.

Or perhaps I'm the ONLY one in this forum who ever approached a KJ after waiting nearly two hours to sing (and witnessing some person in the back who I was SURE just sang his third tune) to ask when I was up?

I have a couple of new shows that are still building, and it's pretty common right now to have ten or twelve singers. When one of them comes up to me three or four tunes after they sang and starts whining, I get a little frustrated. After all, it's obvious that there are very few people in the place and they'll get their turn.

On the other hand, I have a venue that regularly draws 40 plus singers, with rotation times over two hours, and new singers arriving sporatically throughout the evening. When a singer approaches to ask about their turn after they've been waiting patiently for a couple of hours, I can totally understand why they'd inquire. This does not bug me. Most of my regulars are pretty good at knowing who's next, etc. but in a crowd of this size (40 singers usually means 125 to 200 patrons) it's hard for them to keep track.

A KJ acquaintance has helped remedy the "am I next" problem a tiny bit by adding one of those multi-segment scrolling LED signs at his shows. It flashes the name of the current singer, then scrolls the next couple of singers. He raves about the concept, though it seems like he spends quite a bit of time banging away on that little miniture keyboard that controls the sign.

There's a difference between a honest question by a singer and a whiney singer.

Some KJ's think they're bigtime when they first start out. Others are just downhome types that will never be 'bigtime'.

It's all about attitude.

Attitude, I agree, but if you are doing the job right, and its really only a select few, (newbies, primadonnas, idiots, drunks etc,)then there shouldn't be a problem. I know of a host, on Wednesday nights and she plays favorites every week, not only that but the singers she plays favorites with do the "SAME" songs each and every wednesday. You can count on it like clockwork. She used to be one of the best KJ's I had seen a few years back, but now she has no drive what so ever. Its a sad statement to be able to go to another KJ's show and not want to sing, but know which regulars will be up 3 or 4 times each set just to make them happy and keep them coming back each week. It drives the new people crazy, and makes the regulars hard to deal with in the bar. KJ's need to know that they cannot cater to anyones egos when hosting, in the rotation, or otherwise. I will always applaud a singers performance, because we want "all" our singers to feel good about coming to our shows, but everyone needs to be treated equally. Its to bad some people feel they have to step over that line.

Amen JUST DAVE, DOWNHOME & MIKEY V! I too have had primadonnas who say I AM TOO GOOD A SINGER TO WAIT! To them I say do what makes you happy. Others tell me can they getup right away, they have to go someplace else-yeah all the other people waiting patiently and spending money waiting and I'm gonna pull you ahead to go to another club-NOT!

How about the ones that have to get home or friends are leaving, I tell them I will give back their song slection to bring in to sing next time they come by. No matter how ugly they may get I always meet their request / demand with a smile.

People sing in their posted place in rotation on my dry erase board. Most sit back and relax knowing their turn is assured. Everyone hates to wait, but I attract a lot of faces, some new some regulars from all over the country, but with the board in plain view they understand why the wait is so long.

I do move my shows along at a fast clip of about 4 minutes per singer (14-15 songs/singers per hour). I have made some great customers out of my one time whiners used to throwing their weight around at other shows. A KJ can turn many of these in to good patrons, after all thick hides, mind reading and psychiatry are prerequisites for becoming a KJ! - LOL

Sometimes I experience the opposite...

A "whiney KJ" will sometimes want me to sing certain songs so the audience won't leave! Usually it's when the night is getting a little boring and the crowd is starting to dispurse. I'll usually do his/her request, or an offshoot of it. But, I try to pick what I think everyone will enjoy, and not just the KJ.

Right on Debra!

Good communication is the key to good customer service. Most people accept their position in the rotation if it is explained or shown to them. Sticking to your guns and never playing favorites enhances your credibilty with these folks, and they usually become quite comfortable with the situation. One thing that I try to do that keeps people happy is to insert newcomers (people who haven't yet sung that evening) in within a couple of songs at the most. That way, they get their quick gratification, and they can settle into their spot into the rotation. works great.. people really appreciate it too.

Hey Downhome, that's EVERY party and event I have ever done-except repeat bookings for parties. Then they warm up much faster. This P-l-e-a-s-e one more was recently a very sore point, almost burned me outta being a KJ.

I know that some karaoke companies charge
money per song or receive "tips" from singers
in order to sing. Here in Duluth Mn, karaoke is free to all singers. Whiners simply get put in their place and are reminded of what free means.

I have filled in as a KJ on numerous occasions for a friend of mine and am currently trying to build up my own operation. One night I happened to go to another town and checked out a local establishment featuring karaoke. I filled out a couple of slips for myself and sat down to wait for my turn. I was there for 3 hours and observed the KJ to be very unprofessional. He was drinking, hoarding the mic for his own performances, and was also favoring the opposite sex in the rotation. I got to sing 2 whole songs the entire time. A couple of other guys got a turn apiece, but the women got to sing 2-3 songs each in between us. In my opinion, he was giving KJ's a bad image. Therefore, I can understand a "few" of the whiners.

I'll add that I didn't once ask him "am I up next? I just walked over to his booth and looked at the slips that he had out in his rotation to see when I was up.

Hey L'Opera, how bout a nice leg lamp with real fishnet stocking for Chrismas this year instead of the RR BB gun (you might shoot yourself in the eye). Get a blow pipe and dart set - more of a challenge (be sure to call your shot first!).
