I start a gig next week that has a pretty decent sound systems already set up and a box to plug in via balanced line and unbalanced line. If I do not use my Radio Shack SSM 1850 mixer, I would plug my two wireless mics straight into their system (balanced) and my laptop straight in via the "line input" (unbalanced). Then, control vol from their master. Question is, should I do that or run through my mixer? Reading up, I'm concerned about not using balanced audio. Any ideas/comments?

Depends on the system you are plugging into. I'd prefer to use my own mixer if it was better than the house - or didn't require repatching to their PA. Also often times on mixers, the line inputs are also balanced, so you could still use a balanced connection. If their system was better, i'd just take a couple channels of their mixer & use that.
Sounds like if they have a nice system, then it would not be wise to plug in a radio shack mixer. Best to jack into their system. Yet always remember in the back of your mind when you use someone elses system and something goes wrong. Even when it is not your fault, they tend to blame you for breaking the equipment.
