Hi folks! I'm new to these boards but have been a Sound Choice customer for many years.
Every month I eagerly check the Future Releases in hope that some of my favorite bands will be available on the latest karaoke CD-Gs, and very rarely does it happen.
I help run a weekly alternative karaoke night in Los Angeles where the regulars are mostly goth, industrial and punk fans. Although some of you may not be familiar with some of the bands and songs we like, I assure you there's a world-wide fan base that would be thrilled to see more karaoke in these genres...
Sure there's a few scattered tracks here and there, but I figured I would join these boards and implore all the powers that be to release more of the following artists and songs:
BAUHAUS (Bela Lugosi's Dead, She's In Parties, Dark Entries) NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS (Red Right Hand, Let Love In, The Mercy Seat) THE CRAMPS (Can Your ***** Do The Dog?, What's Inside A Girl, Bikini Girls With Machine Guns, Human Fly) JOY DIVISION (Atmosphere, She's Lost Control, Transmission) DEAD CAN DANCE (The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove, Severance, Cantara) JESUS AND MARY CHAIN (Just Like Honey, April Skies) LOVE AND ROCKETS (Haunted, Kundalini Express, No New Tale To Tell) SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES (Dazzle, Christine, Spellbound) COCTEAU TWINS (Pearly Dew Drops Drop, Heaven or Las Vegas, Iceblink Luck) MINISTRY (Stigmata, Thieves, Every Day Is Halloween) FRONT 242 (Headhunter) B-MOVIE (Nowhere Girl) LEGENDARY PINK DOTS (Princess Coldheart, Just A Lifetime) MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT (Sex On Wheels)
I know licensing might be an issue, but some of these bands like Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Love and Rockets and Joy Division have at least 1 karaoke track already out on Sound Choice or one of the competing labels. My fingers are crossed that at least some of the above will eventually make their way into our collection!

I'd love to check out your show and while I am not familiar with a lot of those bands, I'm sure I would like them!

I've got a decent punk/goth/alternative/whatever following at my shows and have had requests specifically for a lot of the bands you have mentioned, notably: Cuts You Up--Peter Murphy (of Bauhaus) Love Will Tear Us Apart--Joy Division Everyday Is Halloween--Ministry Peek a Boo and Cities in Dust--Siouxsie & The Banshees Head On--Jesus and Mary Chain as well as more tunes from Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, The Smiths, XTC, Social Distortion, and Sonic Youth. There is a market for this stuff. My Smiths discs from a company that will remain nameless get used at almost every show I do now. So I'm all for more of this stuff.
BTW, when did this board become so mean spirited?

Thanks karaokemonkey. I appreciate a bit of a warmer welcome here. For your information, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" has already been released on CD-G (on another label that shall remain nameless), as well as numerous songs from many of those other bands you mentioned.
As for SOME of the other folks on these boards, what gives?
At our karaoke club there's a lot of people who look kind of weird and may listen to stuff that your average Top 40 or Country fan might not, but we still respect everyone's song selections. Some folks like Phil Collins and Pat Benatar and they get just as big a cheer as the people who sing more obscure artists like Tom Waits, The Pixies and Nine Inch Nails.
Karaoke is about having fun and singing the songs you love, but it's also about respecting the fact that there's many people out there with a wide range of tastes and musical styles.
So I encourage some of you who might not have heard of some of the bands I listed above to give them a listen. Download a song or two from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Dead Can Dance or The Cramps. You might actually like it.
Of course, you might hate it as well. There's no accounting for taste...
There's a huge network of fans of this music. Tens of thousands of people go to alternative music festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza every year, and many of them love to go to karaoke clubs.

As Tony as my Witness and I am open for all things as I love all kinds of music but somethings just isnt worth the thought of asking...
Sorry if I came off a little Harsh but there have been people in the past that annoyed many from similar goth requests non stop as they have been told before that Goth isnt much interest in the Karaoke world of the remaining labels making the tracks. Regardless welcome to the boards and hopefully you'll enjoy some great people on here.
But I do enjoy alot of Death Metal or Goth as I have requested some in the past myself but that was until I knew that it was a lost cause.
See your from LA are you just a singer or a KJ? Make sure you join alot of us regulars on the singers and KJ pages of share songs you sing and your opinions on other discussions..Once again sorry for the Jerk ways and Welcome aboard!!!!

I agree that we won't see much goth or death metal; but requesting a song or two here or there should be okay. There are a couple that have made an impact - Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds' Red Right Hand was featured on an episode of the X-Files and the soundtrack.

Bauhaus has had "Bela Lugosi's Dead" featured in the movie "The Hunger", while Nick Cave's "Red Right Hand" was also used in the movies "Hellboy" and "Scream". Joy Division has seen their story put to celluloid in not one but two feature films: "24 Hour Party People" and the upcoming "Control".
It's weird that I feel like I have to defend the relevancy of these bands when they have so many fans around the world. Believe it or not, there's more than one alternative music karaoke night happening out there right now, and more and more are sprouting up all the time.
Although a Goth themed karaoke disc may not get much play in middle America, I guarantee you that big cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland would have plenty of people interested in CD-G's that feature these artists.

First of all I STRONGLY disagree with showtime calls...just because your not familar with the music dont mock it as a quote him "but somethings just isnt worth the thought of asking..." Well in larger cities like NY & Chicago and now even in St. Louis they have a night called Punk Rock Karaoke.....Basically its a band ..and you insert the lead singer. I went to a Punk Rock karaoke one night while I was in Chicago....and what did I hear....it was so cool...Alot of the artist howardh23 mentioned were done... I heard Slice of life by Bauhaus...NO new tale to tale by Love & Rockets and Sex on wheelz by My life with the thrill kill kult.....I feel some of the people who karaoke know there was a demand for this and nothing was being done...so they started Punk Rock Karaoke nights. http://www.punkrockkaraoke.com/ check out a website dedicated to it.
Here is my list...I dont know how to catagorize it under goth/industrial..some punk...but here it goes
Sex on wheelz --My like with the thrill kill kult Juke Joint Jezebel by KMFDM Down in it by Nine inch nails Sin City by the Genitortures Headhunter by Front 242 Stars & stripes by KMFDM I Don't Like The Drugs by Marilyn Manson This is the new **** by Marilyn Manson Mobscene by Marilyn Manson The hand that feeds by Nine inch nails Suck by Pigface Godstar by Psychic TV Slice of life by Bauhaus Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus Ball of confusion by Love & Rockets No new tale to tell by Love & Rockets Stigmata by Ministry Jesus buit my hotrod by Ministry Bikini Girls With Machine Gun by The Cramps
Its all wishful thinking but maybe someday someone will adopt the idea of such a compilation and we can hope its SC..but like I always say..."Dont hold your breath" !!! So far since I been on the boards maybe 2 songs have made it ...Tim

Hey! I've never heard Nick Cave's version of "Red Right Hand", but I LOVE the version by Giant Sand! I have that on a compilation CD (and I had read somewhere that it was a cover version). I'm curious to hear the original. I'll have to check it out sometime.

having just moved from Portland, and knowing many goth singers that came into Joe's "Queen of Hearts" venue, I can agree that there is a niche market to appeal to.
however, I think SC might have their own thoughts on how much something like this might cost VS the potential payback.

Without a good selection of music, there really is no point to hosting karaoke at all. It seems that everyplace around here only hosts country music. Many of my friends who would go to a karaoke bar do not go because of the selection. By expanding the selection of music, the host is able to draw in a diverse crowd. Profits go up. Everyone is happy.
Many years ago I never thought that a group like Nine Inch Nails would see the light of Top 40. Sure Trent Reznor isn't Front 242 or Combichrist, but it has been my experience that whenever I have shown someone some EBM Industrial musicians, 90% of the time they have really gotten into them. I think what we are dealing with is either fear, or lack of exposure, or both.
Mark my word, these artists will see the light of CD+G / MP3+g / DVD+G. I will personally see to it.
Sean
